Question speaker upgrade

I have the 2011 convertible with the V6 and its got the factory shaker 500 system with no navigation, just wondering if anyone knows about upgrading the door and rear speakers to get a better sound. I want to keep the factory deck and just upgrade the speakers...I went to a shop and was told no problem, another stereo place said its not going to work due to my model being a DSP system, requiring me to change the entire system...has anyone just replaced speakers and added an amp?

I have Polk Audio DB571 in my door and rear without an amp and will be putting the Shelby 8 inch sub in the doors. I do have the Electronics package and according to Shelby do not need the amp for the subs while the normal shaker does. I know my Factory Mustang Radio Makes the Canadian Non HD Sony System in my F150 sound like Pup Poop.

A full swap is certainly not needed. Many owners have just swapped their speakers with no other changes. I just (this past weekend) changed all four of my speakers to JBL GX862s. I also added XTC shallow baffles on all four to help with what bass is possible. It’s a nice upgrade and doesn’t require much effort. With speakers, baffles, and Metra 72-5601 quick connectors I was in at $145.

I would put the sound quality closer to my Lexus or Porsche now. Still no real bass, but it is much tighter sounding and the mids and highs (vocals) are so much better. Well worth the time.

My 2011 (coupe) has the Shaker 500 too. The door subs are good enough for me. I believe there is a small amp in the trunk, maybe for the subs? I changed all the other speakers. The Shaker 500 factory speakers are such low quality and pure crap, I through them in the trash

Like others have said, you can replace the speakers with no problem. If you want to add a different amp it requires a little extra work, but isn't that bad. You should just be able to use the line level inputs on the new amp to pick up the factory signal (worked with the 05-09 shaker system).

Like David said, the stock speakers are absolute garbage. You will get a nice improvement just replacing them. If you don't get a new amp, make sure the new speakers power rating is close to the factory output to get the most out of them.

How much of a pain is it to replace the rear speakers?
I thought I saw somewhere that half the rear of the car has to come apart to remove that rear parcel shelf?

If I were to do it again I wouldn't go through the effort to upgrade the rear speakers. It's a lot of work, I have most of my sound set more towards the front speakers anyway.

That's funny because I always thought the rear speakers were the easiest to upgrade. I always preferred my music to be tuned/biased towards the back. It gives me a headache if it's pounding beside or in front of me.

I have my fader set a bit toward the front, I used to be huge into stereo, my first car was a 1200+ watt sound system on wheels, it hit over 120dB at one point, lol.
I miss bass, especially with this system in the Mustang, the most basic audio set-up offered in '13.

I already upgraded the front speakers, so it kinda sounds like I won't bother with the rears.

Do you have a preference of brand? Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer and etc... Then 6x9 or whatever size and talk to an installer they'll lead you in the right direction.

I have an old set of Kenwood 7x10 speakers.
They used to fit in 6x9 openings. Any chance they might fit in the rear speaker openings in my '13? Anybody know?

You will need to find Pre 13'-14' Ford speaker brackets 4R3Z 18B947 AA and 4R3Z 18B947 BA since the way the speakers are in the front it would not mount without having an air gap and since you have the Nav you should look for 2 Ohm speakers. 5X7/6X8 will fit in front and rear as long as you have said door adapters.

The Speaker opening is 5X7/6X8 so I am not sure Gabe. With enough trimming anything can fit.

I did change the rears with 5x7 polk audio db-572, so looking for something that will fit in the doors possibly the same speakers with adapters or should I go with a component system?

You could just put the same speakers in the doors that you did in the rear, a component setup would give you better sound though. They make adapters to where you can fit a 5 1/4 set in the door locations. Some you can even fit the tweeter in there too. I mounted my tweeters in the little top piece where the mirror controls go.
