Is there some tweak to get the base radio to sound any better without major surgery? I'm guessing no but thought it was worth asking.

I think you can make the base radio package sound much better. I doubt it lives up to some audiophile standard but it works for me now. I had a base GT performance and weight is an issue for me. I first added some Boston Acoustic front door speakers with Neodymium magnets. They weigh less than the original speakers and sound better but have no more bass maybe less. I knew I had to add a woofer. I previously removed the rear shelf speaker never used them or liked them and completely sealed off the trunk area for performance and safety reasons so a trunk mounted sub woofer would not work. I found a set of shaker 500 door panels with stock speakers and the leather center section so all in all a nice improvement. I added an amp in the trunk and ran the feed to the amp from the now not used rear speaker lines. Ran new speaker lines from the amp to the shaker 500 door speakers. After some rough in adjusting it is sound darn good. I can adjust the amount of bass in the music with the fader control of the stock radio. I am looking for some woofers with neodymium magnets but haven't found any that fit yet.

search around the forum. there are recommendations for speaker upgrades and aftermarket items that will undo the bass rolloff as you increase the volume.

honestly, I think there is only so much you can do with it and should swap out the head unit, but it's your call.

Thanks for the info, but its too much surgery - I was hoping there was some kind of BIOS or other tweak. I mean, its not terrible, I wish it sounded just a tad better.

I think there is a way to adjust the dilithium crystal to improve sound performance. Unless you have the automatic, which uses a flux capacitor, and that's not adjustable.

30 years ago... modding your Mustang's performance didn't involve a computer at all - now its all tunes - it is too far a stretch to think the radio isn't any different? Once upon a time you had to pay extra for a chip with a math co-processor - fact of the matter is: it was there the whole time, it was just disabled on the cheaper chips.

Closing the pass through strengthens the chassis. Closing it off is required when the battery is in the trunk in case the battery explodes.

Hate to admit t but the oem stereo in my 07 was a serious piece. I got the Kenwood DNX 7180 and have been loving everyday of it. The stock speakers are night and day better and I am only running the 4 speaker setup!
