Replace OEM Nav with Aftermarket

I had a 2010 F-150 Lariat Supercrew 4x4 that I installed a Kenwood DNX-890hd, the Maestro (sync interface), speakers, amps and a sub. That set up was awesome! I would like to do the same thing in my 2012 Mustang GT premium w/nav. All I have seen is people adding a navigation receiver to the Shaker system without nav. Has anyone replaced the OEM nav with aftermarket? My OEM nav unit sits higher in the dash than the aftermarket units I have seen. Is there a faceplate where I can keep my climate controls and keep the nav up high where it belongs?

I'd recommend this.

This is what I will be doing to mine and it sounds like it's the exact same setup you have in your truck.

Why would you want to replace the factory nav with a smaller screen? What are your goals/dissatisfactions?

I personally would switch it out because with an Aftermarket head unit, putting things like amps and subs is significantly easier and I don't know how Ford does it, but I think Garmin/Kenwood/Alpine would be much more apt to push out product and navigation updates.

But that's just me.

I paid something like $2,500 for my factory (factory option) touch screen. This looks like something to do when our Mustangs are 15 to 20 years old and it stops working. Just my opinion

Hmm.

You can't have an aftermarket unit sitting at the same height as your OE Nav: that is only the screen and it is like 1/2" thick. The actual unit sits exactly where the other radios sit, too, behind the climate control buttons.

The Nav units are easy to wire up to an aftermarket amp, as the HU doesn't have a build in amp, only the one in the trunk. So it is pretty easy to replace that amp with an aftermarket unit.

Interesting. I did not realize the Nav units didn't have an internal amp and that the external amp was in the trunk.

Has ford been good about keeping the maps up to date (in the older modles anyway)? Because that was my main concern with trying to add factory Nav was the potential lack of updates.

You want this:

This is what I am going to use to add my system to my new 2014. Along with an Audison bit one or bit ten D.
