Replace lighter socket with data USB port
Replace lighter socket with data USB port
Has anyone replaced the lighter socket on the dash (above the radio) with a USB port that can be used with the radio (like the one in the center console)? I hate having a long usb cord snaking from the center console up to where I have my phone mounted above the radio. I believe there is a micro-USB port on the Sync module behind the glove box (at least on Nav version) which could be used, as well. The goal would be to have a very short USB cable coming out of the dash where the factory lighter socket is which is essentially right behind my phone mount. I searched but only came up with older threads which referenced that extra USB port in the Sync module.

No I have not seen that done, but sounds like a worthy project. Search this site, and maybe take a run at Google.
I would guess it would not be a tough project to extend the port from the console to the lighter/DC port in the dash, but not sure about finding or adapting a plug to fit.
Good luck and keep us posted. If you do it document the process and pitfalls.

So, here's what I would do if I were in your shoes.
The stock port, a flap.
You will follow these instructions to remove the existing power port

These are the instructions for people who are installing the push button start. This will allow you to get in / behind it. What I would do ia find a way to modify the stock power port to have a USB mounted to the flat surface of the flap. Then just route that all the way down and under the center console.
