Question PLX DM-6 vs. Aeroforce Interceptor gauges

Hey guys, I was planning on going with a triple gauge setup of aeroforce interceptors but now I'm strongly considering the PLX DM-6 model. One thing I don't like about the interceptors are their old school display style and crude bevel design. Functionally they rock but I was hoping for that kind of money, the design would match but to me it doesn't.

Anyone try anything, ideally the DM-6, from PLX? They had a strong showing at SEMA and the DM seems very thought out and clean.

Here is the DM-6 page: http://www.plxdevices.com/product_info.php?id=MULTDM6

Here is the SEMA video:

Well, I ended up going with a triple Aeroforce Interceptor setup. 3 days ago I reached out to both PLX and Aeroforce regarding various data points and what adapters I'd need to cover what I'm looking for. I never got a response from PLX. On the Aeroforce side the president of the company, Todd Austinson, answered my questions within 24 hours. Despite the somewhat dated (IMO) look of the interceptors display, I decided to order them up today.

They are going into a BOSS triple gauge pod located in the center of the dash. I'll post up some pics once they are in and setup.

the only thing i don't like about the aeroforce is the old school LCD display. once it gets warmed up, it gets extremely hard to read from the display getting washed out. maybe it's because it's in the vent, I dunno. it doesn't get any better whether I use the reverse color option or not.

the PLX's do look pretty nice.

Good to know. With yours being in the A/C vent (lower left or center?) I would think it would be a darker overall environment than the center dash which is where mine are going. Being darker I assi,e your scenario would be ideal as far as visibility & clarity is concerned so it worries me that it appears washed out for you. I do have 30% tint on the sides and rear, with 50% on the front windshield, that plus the boss laguna seca triple pod has little visors that stick out just above where the gauges actually set to block light so hopefully those factors combined will help compensate for any washout. I'll certainly circle back on this post with day & night pics. PLX never did get back to me.

it's washed out from the LCD display getting hot (just being on for a while, it's not getting washed out from the sun, but rather from the heat in or behind the LCD screen.). It's mounted in the left AC vent under the a-pillar. I don't know if it just happens to me or others have the same issues ( I have the blue LCD display and it happens whether I have the heater or AC on).

I do have to say that if there is a way to shut off those annoying multicolor LCDs, them I might have to pick up a DM6.

EDIT: Screw it, I just ordered a DM100 OBDII from AM. PLX showed it out of stock, but AM shows it in stock. fingers crossed....

If I was to do it over again, I wouldn't pick aeroforce. For one I have issues with my gauge and once inside the car heats up, it is hard than hell to read the display.

Wow, ok yeah that is pretty bad, thanks a ton for chiming in. Oddly enough I could hardly find any negative feedback on these gauges, I guess the owners of them are keeping secrets because that is pretty bad, especially when seen next to a more traditional style gauge. Thanks man.

Hey I meant to ask, did you end up having to trim the gauge surrounds to get them to nest in there so nicely?

Thanks,
-Mike

The studs on the aeroforce gauge wouldn't reach the mounting holes in the pod so I ended up extending one of studs.
I had to cut the plastic away from the mounting holes in pod and fab a metal bracket to hold the autometer gauges in place.

Would you say that 3 interceptors would sit flush together within the mounting holes? I think I might have to trim the outsides of the lip rings a bit, at least that is what I'm seeing other folks having to do although I haven't seen a triple interceptor setup specifically in the BOSS dash pod.

Thanks for the tip on extending the studs!

The aeroforce trim ring is 2 1/4 wide and the autometer rings are 2 3/16 and I have about 1/16 between the rings. It will be close. Another option is to slighty widend the two outer holes on the pod so the left and right gauges sit out enough to fit all three without trimming the rings. Just make sure you only trim enough so the ring will still cover the opening.

Great idea, thanks again for the insight!

I installed the PLX gauge tonight and am still trying to learn how to use it.
I think in terms of ease of use and programming and installation, the Interceptor is better. the PLX comes with this control box that is kinda big, but stows in under the dash.

however, in terms of display, the PLX's OLED screen can't be beat. I wasn't a huge fan of the 2 buttons on the interceptor because they didn't always work that great. with the PLX, you press the top/bottom or left/ride sides of the gauge to navigate through the functions. there is a bit of a lag from when you press, so it is easy to assume nothing happens and you end up pressing it again and then you overshoot it in the navigation. at the end of the day though, the interceptor was pretty useless for me because I couldn't read the display properly.

I painted the bezel silver and gave it a white face because I like it to match the rest of the dash, but here's how it looks:

That looks sharp! I've got all my gauges in, and the pod, but haven't had time to start installing them just yet. I'm hoping to have them in this week, I'll post some pics once up. I can't believe how crisp the screen is on that PLX, good stuff man.
