Most cost effective upgrades for non-audiophile
Hey guys, I have a '13 GT with base stereo and Sync...so just the 4 speakers, no subs. Needless to say, the audio quality in this car is garbage. My 2006 Elantra has better, deeper sounding speakers. I'm no audophile or subwoofer obsessed showoff...I just want to upgrade to something acceptable. I have a friend with a GT premium, and I think his sounds great. If I had a budget of $500, could I get this car sounding decent? I love listening to music in the car and have a huge music collection, and want to make it a better experience. Even my friends comment that the speakers sound like crap. What do you guys recommend? I don't know all that much about car audio. Do I need a line out adapter? I don't want to install a sub. I just want some more bass. Can I get that with just new speakers?

i replaced the front speakers and got a 10" sub for the trunk, made a big difference atleast for me. I came from a fusion that had way better sound and i was kind of turned off of how poor the sound quality was in the mustang.

Oh to answer your other question, i doubt you're going to get much more bass out of just buying some speakers. Even with my new front ones they still didn't put out enough base, i think its just a limitation to the head unit.

I don't understand how my 06 Elantra puts out enough bass for me and it doesnt have a subwoofer, and the Mustang couldnt match it with the bass manually cranked all the way up

New speakers will help. A new head unit, with amp before the speakers will sound best. Without an amp you won't really get much more volume (if any), and without a head unit the sound being outputted is "shaped" by the stock stereo to be friendly to the stock speakers. Same with sub, for best results a head unit is required, but you can do it without.

the Elantra probably has a labeled audio system, bose or sony or something like that.
And if you go a new head unit route like mention i believe you need to get a whole new radio trim thing which cost's 100-200$ alone.

I will never install a new head unit in this car. I don't want some ugly single or double DIN head unit sticking out like a sore thumb in the center. Plus then I would lose SYNC functionality and steering wheel controls I imagine. Maybe I should just buy a stock used Shaker system

Unfortunately for 5x7 speakers, you're not going to find any in the aftermarket for improved bass, they're just not made for low frequencies. It'll be an upgrade for clarity for sure though. Look into a powered subwoofer setup. They're not very expensive, or overbearing bass output, can tap into existing speaker wire for a high level signal input, and won't take up much of any space in the trunk.

My pioneer 5x7s do just fine for bass, at least a definite improvement over stock (no amp, either). Just need to buy the right stuff. Not the same as a sub, but sounds fine for most stuff.

I can at least try a speaker upgrade first and see if it's good enough for me, then maybe get one of those off the shelf subs that is form fitted for the trunk from American Muscle. What Pioneer speakers do you have? What about a line out converter? I keep hearing people say you need one of those. I don't know anything!

You do need a set of adapters per pair of speakers, so they are plug and play. If buying from crutchfield they include them for "Free".
I wasn't happy with only a speaker upgrade, stock HU is junk . To be honest if your looking for more boom just get the sub and tap for audio from the rear speakers. Hardest part of that is running the power wire to the front.

Good god...this thing is $1200. Maybe I should look into a Shaker conversion with used parts. I know someone did it on here. Was a huge hassle from what I remember though

You can also go custom for about $450 - 600 depending on sub, sub box, amp and wiring.
Something like this (take note these are listed as manufacturer refurbs):

A lot of the issue is the source. It's garbage there so anything downstream will also he garbage. Just sayin', speakers will help and sub gets more bass but overall without changing the source you're only getting louder, not better.
