The fact about the Sync microphone built into the mirror has already been established. You would not wear a mirror out by just pushing some light touch buttons. If the ball sockets get loose it's because of expansion and contraction over many years of environmental exposure or deliberate and constant moving of the mirror to adjust it over many years of use. At that point it would be time to replace it anyway.

The 12's are wired for lighted vanity mirrors. I installed a set into my 07 just 2 weeks ago and they came out of a v6 2012 Mustang. Fit fine, but I had to install my own harness. 2 each wires run down the right pillar and hooked into the fuse panel. I added a Homelink mirror which I also installed into the fuse panel. It was simple to run down the right side pillar and hook into the fuse panel. I had a Ford pdf that I downloaded for installing it,, so it was a piece of cake. Took about a half hour to do the mirror and a hour for the visors, since I had to run a harness thru the headliner and around the center section of the dome lamps. Worked out great and now I have a Homelink mirror with compass and autodim, and now light vanity visors. I put the 3 button style Homelink like shown in one picture into my Explorer and it worked great.

Installed autodim rearview with homelink from DND Enterprises out of Florida,in my 2012, by tapping into lh vanity mirror wires, after dropping lh visor. Also put same mirror, same way, in my 03.Works great; takes about 30 minutes. New mirror about $100 bucks off ebay. Luck.
