Looking to add power rear view mirror...possible?

I am looking to add the rear view mirror with the garage opener built in. I have the basic mirror in my car and was curious if the power and what ever else is required is run above the headliner and I can pull them down to use. Anyone ever done this?

Why? Just get the visor. The mirror with the garage door opener wasn't a very good thought out plan.

To be honest, I didnt know that was the location of the garage opener. I am just looking for a clean factory look, not the big eye sore of a button. Is the power and everything to make it work properly already up there?

Yes, most likely you have the wiring. Take off a visor and look for the plug. Even of you don't have it, Ford sells a wiring harness for it for like 15.00

If you are doing just a garage door opener you can tap into the wiring for the on-demand map lights. There is no wiring up there with key on-off function unless you already have the automatic dimming rear view mirror. If you get a mirror that requires key on-off function such as a compass/temp mirror then it's very easy to run an extra wire just inside the front edge of the headliner and down the RH side A-pillar trim to the fuse box.

The pre-wiring is positively not there for visor mounted lighted vanity mirrors. That has to be added in. Also, the factory visor mounted Homelink unit run off the same wiring that supplies the lighted vanity mirrors. It's easy to pick up the circuit right from the on-demand map lights in the overhead console which is fed by a yellow wire and grounded with a black/yellow wire. The circuit will turn itself off as part of the battery saver function if a visor is left open for the light to stay on or if a map light is left on.

I did my own Homelink install using a three button unit hidden inside the overhead map light with a remote mounted small pushbutton switch mounted in the overhead map light housing. I was not about to pay the high dollars for a pair of sunvisors with lighted vanity mirrors and Homelink.

Why do you say a mirror with the Homelink garage door opener is not a good thought out plan? I think it is well integrated.

You can't replace mirror if you have Sync. Mirror has Homelink and visor has Car2U. Most people like Homelink better. FYI. That pic was my install in a 2006 Mustang long time ago.

Since he has a 12, wiring should be there already since it was standard on premium models. 10's and 11's won't have the wiring.

Im kind of lost now haha, sorry. So if I was to find one mirror with the controls built in I could retain my lighted mirror and then have the garage opening feature?

I say that because a mirror is something I don't want to touch and possible move.

Probably just names. I put the 2012 visors in my 2011 and it comes with 3 programmable buttons. I don't know how many buttons homelink has.

My mirror doesn't move when I touch it. You would have to push it very hard, way more than the effort of the push buttons to move it.

What do you mean lighted mirror? Lighted vanity mirrors??

Regardless, you can retain the function of everything if you switch the mirror to a Homelink type if your vehicle is not equipped with Sync or an automatic dimming rearview mirror. If you have just a plain mirror there is no issue to replacing it. And yes Sync equipped cars have the microphone on top of the mirror housing.

Homelinks have three buttons. And Ford uses Homelink units as original equipment in vehicles equipped with the visor controls and other vehicles adapting the same unit into overhead consoles.

Over time it will, just saying and sync is in the factory mirror.
