An easy mod to replace the front speakers on 2013 Shaker system (pic heavy)
An easy mod to replace the front speakers on 2013 Shaker system (pic heavy)
After reading lots of threads here I finally decided to order some Pioneer replacements for my doors. Turns out I missed the part where the 2013 Shaker system uses different speakers than the 2010-12. As a result standard 6x8's are no longer a drop in replacement. There is however an adapter ring for the 2010 that can be ordered from Tousley Ford for about $12ea plus $16 for speedy shipping. As I started my project Friday night and wanted it done now. I decided to hack up my factory speakers and use them to mount my new speakers. Plus I didn't want to spend almost $40 for adapters. And lets be honest, those factory speakers will never be put back in there so it just makes sense to use what I have. Here's lots of pics of how I did it.
Here's what you start with...

Once removed you're left with this odd hole...

You can see here the Shaker speaker in the 2013 is actually two low quality component speakers, and the 6x8 isn't an easy drop in...

First I flipped the new speaker upside down and drilled four reference holes where the new screws will go...

Then I outlined in pencil the area I would leave in place to serve as a mounting tab. I then cut along the inside edge of the foam and around each little bump...

My bandsaw made quick work of it. The first one I did I used a scroll saw and didn't have to cut in from the side like I did with the band saw...

Looks decent...I cut through the edge to get the bandsaw started and once tightened down you don't even notice the cut, nor does it hurt anything. MUCH faster than a scroll saw or dremel...

Looks way better. Here's the scrap center...

The two are about the same height. Although close, the top of the tweeter is still about 3/16" from the inside of the door grill when installed so we're good there...

Here's the two for comparison...

The new speaker installed...

It was totally worth the 2+ hours it took to take everything apart, find the problem, find the solution and put it back together! I imagine this fix would work with any 6x8 speaker of your choice. If however hacking up the stock speakers isn't for you, here's a link to the spacers you need...http://www.tousleyfordparts.com/part...eaker%20spacer
Good luck!

Thanks for all the the great info and pics. Something I've been on the fence about doing. Not sure I want to jump into just yet. Who knows, maybe they changed again for 2014.
It's almost like Ford goes out of their way to be so fracking weird with their speakers. And... I really don't know why that is. There's no reason to it except future parts order... and you've shown that's not even a guarantee.
Although I kinda do like the setup they have with the round and the tweet there... still.
