Thumbs up Coastal Electronics Sync Unlock Key (2011 GT)

Coastal Electronics website http://www.coastaletech.com/synclockpick.htm

The kit comes with the firmware unit which is about 3"x4"x1 thick and the jumper harness to tie it into the system for about $250 delivered. The firmware "key" is simple to use. The unlock menu is displayed on the Nav unit screen by pressing the telephone button on the steering wheel for 3 seconds. A menu will popup on the Nav screen that lets you say "yes" to Nav input. After selecting yes, the GPS moving signal is killed for one minute. You can access the Nav address, movie listing, and other functions that may be normally locked out while the vehicle is moving for one minute. After 60 seconds those functions are grayed out again. However, if you need more time simply access the menu through the telephone button for 3 seconds and the Nav unit returns to the same addressing or movie listing screen where you were at before the system was blocked. You also have the option to disable the DVD lockout at the initial setup or have it work through the same menu selections each time you want to use it.

The videos on how to remove the radio cover panels are accurate for a simple radio with a standard stick shift but not for the full blown Nav system and an automatic transmission. Since the instructions with the kit don't cover the differences I'll list them here.

Be aware that all wiring plugs have tabs on them to release the harnesses so don't pull on them without pushing those tabs to release the plugs or you will damage the units. Each of the plugs is a different size so you can't make a mistake by putting them back in the wrong places.

To install you will need to start by removing the center console panel. You can get the general idea by checking out this youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-cu5efYlUw . However, for an automatic transmission don't attempt to remove the automatic shifter handle...it is not necessary. First, remove the chrome shifter trim ring by popping it off the shifter surround by pulling up on it. Then put the shifter in the 1st gear position so you have more room to pull the radio panel (hint: level ground and emergency brake?). The console panel will pop up just like the video and the two forward tabs will slide out of the radio stack if you lift up the rear of the panel. Pop up the console panel carefully working toward the front. You will then need to undo the wiring plug to the trunk switch just forward of the shifter by pressing on the retainer tab then swing the panel around out of your way. Since you are not replacing the panel there is no reason to remove the wire harnesses to the lights at the rear of the console panel unless you want.

After removing the (2) 7mm screws at the bottom of the radio panel pull it off carefully by starting at the bottom (there are two tabs at the top so pull the bottom out first). Remove the two harness wires that are attached to it and put the panel out of your way. There are little release tabs to push so don't just pull on the wires without releasing the plugs. Before going further I suggest placing a towel over the console area and under the DVD box so that the screws you remove won't fall into inaccessible areas. Remove (6) 7mm screws that retain the Nav panel and the DVD unit. Pull the Nav panel out a bit and remove the two cables by depressing the tabs and wiggling them a bit. There is a black plastic box behind the Nav panel that needs to be removed next. Remove the wiring plugs then carefully lift it up by placing a thin bladed screwdriver under each corner and lifting upward. Set it aside out of your way.

The real harness connectors that you need to access are at the bottom backside of the DVD unit. Take care because the FM antenna, rearview camera, and GPS antenna connectors are small and there is very little slack in the wiring. Pull the DVD box out a bit and look behind it with a flashlight and mirror. You can see a little tab on the top of each connector. By pushing the tab with a small flat bladed screwdriver you can wiggle the wires loose. The FM antenna at the bottom rear of the DVD box on the passenger side is a bit different. Push the wire in then pull out on the thimble around the end of the wire that locks it into place and it will come out easily. Now you will have more slack and can remove the rest of the connectors.

Plug the kit wiring harness into the DVD unit and then plug the vehicle harness into the jumpers where they fit as you move the DVD unit back into place. You can now start plugging the other wires back into the DVD unit. Plug in the FM and GPS antennas last. You will insert the GPS antenna jumper from the kit into the DVD unit then the vehicle GPS wire into the jumper (this is what makes the system work by killing the GPS signal for a minute each time you want to make an input).

Run the new harness (that goes from the DVD box to the firmware box) up the right hand side or passenger side of the DVD box. You will need to run it over the structure and into the top of the passenger glove box for access so the system can be updated from time to time. Some of the structure may be sharp so wrap the wires where needed and tywrap them in place so they won't chafe and short out some time in the future. Only install the bottom screws for the DVD box at this time because the Nav panel overlaps the top of the DVD box and they share (2) screws.

Now, reinstall the plastic box that was removed from behind the Nav panel and install the wiring plugs. Then plug the appropriate wires into the back of the Nav panel and install it with (4) screws. Plug in the two wires to the radio panel, push into place, and install it with the remaining two screws. Orient the console panel then insert the wiring plug to the trunk switch and push the panel into place. Pop the shifter trim ring into place and the job is done.

Put the shifter back into the park position and turn on the ignition to the accessory position. The unit will power up and show that the key is initializing. Follow the directions that came with the kit
