Anyone put 6x9 speakers in the rear shelf?
Thinking about putting 6X9 speakers in the rear of my 12 base . Anyone do this without any major modification? What speakers? I never really liked the 5x7/6x8 speakers.
I thought I saw someone say they just bolted them up from below the deck with minimal or no cutting. I'm going 6.5 "JBL's in the door and a NVX amp and possibly adding the Shelby Kicker 8" subs in the lower door later if I can without to much modification.

Honestly, considering you're running subs and the fact that the rear speakers don't really offer a whole lot...just stick with whatever is easiest. In fact, I generally prefer the smaller speakers (unless I get into the higher end stuff) as they sound a little cleaner in my experiences...especially with cheap speakers.

I'm going to do the door and rear speakers first. If I get enough base I might not do the subs, but am considering it. I dont listen to rap, so I dont need booming base, but want some punch in my rock and roll and some good mid base that the 6.5's might not deliver.

I'll be installing a pair of 10's very soon but adding 6x9's to the rear deck was one of my first mods.
first I cut out 2ea 7x10 rectangles in the rear deck with my air chisel. Then cut out a 9x12 adapter out of 5/8 MDF and made the 6x9 cutouts in them. I also coated them with black plasti-dip. Last, I drilled holes for the speaker grills in the rear deck and mounted the 6x9's from the bottom. the grills hold the speakers up and keeps the adapters flush against the bottom of the deck.
I have some photo's and will post them one of these days. sound quality greatly improved and I like the look of the grills on the rear deck.

I have done this. I made 2 rings. One set has some "ears" on each end. Then I basically "sandwiched" the speakers and some baffles between the rings. Then I used sheet metal screws to install the eared ring to the bottom of the rear deck. I also put some weatherstripping on the ring that touches the deck to act as a sounds deadener. The baffles keep the pressure created by the sub from interacting with the 6x9's and distorting their sound. Made a tremendous difference in the balance inside the car.
