2010+ Shaker 500 - Specs & Speaker Upgrades
Hey Fellas
I'm new to Mustangs, and even new to FORD. So excuse my ignorance.
So anyways, I have a 2011 Mustang. Came equipped with the Electronics Package ( NAV/HDD ) and the Shaker 500!!!
So the first part is, what exactly does Shaker 500 mean? What does that include or provide? I assume its a level up from base trim, but what do I get with that?
Second question is, after finding out what Shaker 500 consists of? What are my best options to upgrade the speakers? I'm not looking to go all out THUMPING DOWN THE BLOCK, I just want nicer sound inside the cabin. I'm just not sure what to replace and size of current speakers and so forth.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Once I get some help with this i'll probably hit up Crutchfield for brands etc...

I too want easy upgrade on the speakers (retain head unit with NAV, amps, etc).
Adam posted a thread with an easy-upgrade on the front speakers, seemed to make a huge difference. This is the way I'm thinking of going.
You can check out his thread here.

Thanks for posting the link. I would start with upgrading the front speakers per that thread. It improves the mid-bass a lot. I really don't think you'll notice much of an improvement by swapping out the rears. As for the subs, I thought I read that they operate at an impedance that you won't find in aftermarket subwoofers. I could be totally wrong on that. If you want more boom you probably need to throw an amp and sub in the trunk. If you want better mids and highs start with the front speakers and go from there.

So the front doors have a speaker and the bottom one is the sub?
Then 2 more speakers in the back?
So a total of 4 speakers with 2 subs?
I heard the subs have their own mini amp or crossover?
True?
What sizes are these speakers?

I don't know what size the subs are or how they're powered. They're encapsulated into their own little "box" in the door panel. It's hard to describe, but you'll see what I mean when you remove your door panels.

Lots of great info on these forums on speaker replacements. Appreciate all the posts.
I have the 2011 Convertible and wondering what size the rear speakers are compared to the coupe with the 5x7 or 6x8.
I'm looking to replace those as well as the fronts. If anyone has replace the rears on the convertible would be interested in some tips on removing the necessary trim.
Thanks

I just placed an order for a 2012 Mustang. I didn't listen to the radio much during the test drive, but what I heard from the Shaker 500 was a little disappointing. I am planning to upgrade the front 6x8’s to the Pioneer TS-D6802R based on positive reviews on this site and elsewhere on the internet, as well as the fact that they are custom fit for Ford vehicles.
As far as other upgrades, I was wondering if anyone has experience with the Shelby/Kicker system.

I have always built aftermarket systems on my previous vehicles, some of which were high dollar and fairly involved. I would like good sound in the Mustang but I want to keep the stock head unit and I would rather not fill the trunk with amps and a sub box.
The door subs fit right in place and come with a new grill to keep a stock appearance. I have read that other 8” subs require some fabrication for proper fitment. The amp seems pricey but supposedly has some sort of sound processing built in, and it also has a line out to add the 10” amplified trunk subwoofer.
I’m sure for the same money that you could build a good aftermarket system, but I really like the plug-and-play aspect and the stock look of these components.

Just a reminder for folks planning to purchase new speakers or anything else for that matter. Search around for the best prices. Crutchfield has a very nice web site with a lot of products but are not always the cheapest price. I paid 79 for mine and Crutchfield wanted 149 for the exact same speaker. Look further back in this thread for the site where I got them, can't remember the name.

The shaker 500 factory system might not be good enough for people use to heavy aftermarket stereos but the shaker 500 in my 2011 gt is way better and louder and clearer than the shaker 500 in my old 07gt!! All it needs in my opinion is better front 5x7s.....

If you replace the rear speakers amplify them. Thats what i did and it made a huge difference. I installed a high/low level converter off the rear speakers and went with 6x9s with some slight modifications to the rear deck. Made a HUGE difference.
