Tires for Perforance Package Wheels

I have always been partial to the look of a car that has slightly wider tires on the back than the front....just wondering, I have the V6 performance package with the 19 inch wheels, would a slightly larger rear tire fit on these without any issues?

How big are you planning on going? A lot of folks fit 275 or 285 without issues.

Not so much that it looks"gaudy" just enough to give it that nice stance.....does not changing the wheel width cause any issues?

Going with a tire that is too wide for the wheel is not good for the side wall and will compromise handling.

What size do you have, 255/40's?

Yes, I currently have the standard tires that come with the package 255/40R19. These are summer tires, also wondering if there is any issue with flat spots when storing for winter ( I put it away with only 480 miles on it!!!, I hope we get an early spring).

You might be able to fit 275's on the back.

As for flat spots, some people like these:

Hi there. I know this is an old thread, but I thought I might get some help please. Sorry if I'm intercepting. JCStang - I have several questions please, I hope that is okay. You have the 2012 V-6 Performance Package, correct? And you have 255/40 19s, correct? And that tire size is what came stock, correct? Can you please tell me what the width is on your wheels? 8.5"? or 9.0"? I ask all of this because I have a 2011 GT Premium, with the 19" nickel wheel option (not Brembos). My wheels are 8.5" wide, with 245/45 tires. I want to move to 255/40 (all around), but I want to be sure that this will look and perform well. Please let me know, thanks so much!

The GTCS and v6 performance package wheels are basically the same 19x8.5". The GTCS uses 245/45. I am almost positive you can use either size. You are going to have less sidewall so if crappy roads are a problem I'd stick with the taller tires. They are also generally less expensive. However if you're looking for softer compounds, the 255/40s tend to be more summer oriented.

Pete, according to the Tire Rack website for the Brembo package tire, the width range for the wheel is 8.5-10". The Brembo package wheel is 9.0" wide. If you are looking for the extra width visually, it might be affected by the wheel width.

The other crucial measurement is the wheel diameter, as that affects the speedometer reading. For the stock 245/45-19, Tire Rack says the diameter is 27.7". For the one you want to use, the wheel diameter is 27.2". Another number to look at is the revolutions per mile - 751 for the stock tires, 763 for the Brembo ones.

Hi Tony, I saw your post thanks. What I was hoping for was for the V-6 Performance Package owner to confirm his wheel width for me (8.5), so I could be assured of my new tire size fit (255/40). I'm headed to Ford this morning to see, with my fingers crossed. I'm not worried about the overall diameter change, Ford can re-sent my speedometer for me when I get the new size installed.
JCStang - I'm hoping you read my posts and respond, thanks!

According to the order guide posted here, the wheel size is 19 x 8.5" as shown on page 2.

Pete is doing his "due diligence", which I would frankly be doing as well. Fitment can sound great in theory but look different in practice, depending on the tires. I applaud him for taking a little extra time and getting multiple points of input before committing to ripping tires off the wheel, as it were.

Hello, I'm sorry for all of my redundant posts, but I just needed to be sure and have confirmation before I spend $1000. I do really appreciate everyone's help, thank you! I visited to Ford today to confirm. My next post about tires will be with pics of my new tires on my wheels.

New Continental Extreme Contact DW 255/40 19 tires on my nickel wheels (2011 Mustang GT Premium). I thought the new size might have some negative issues (sidewall bulge, look small in wheel-well, vibration, speedometer, etc.). I'm happy to report that I have NONE of these issues. The tires look amazing on the nickel wheels (19 x 8.5), the steering response is quicker, and the feel is great. I'm very happy with my upgrade. Ford Country in Henderson Nevada was awesome, they price-matched the tires (Tire Rack), no shipping, mount & balance, and they recalibrated my speedometer and TPMS. Total price out the door was $1150. I highly recommend this tire size upgrade to anyone with nickel wheels (obviously not for cold and snow). And to be extra nice, Ford slapped on my Shelby GT 500 axle-back mufflers for free! The car is perfect now!
