Projector Bulb Swap

Has anyone done this (I'm sure someone has) purely for a color change? I have a '13 GT, and I have been perfectly happy with my factory HIDs. I changed my grille for the California Special, and I installed HIDs into the projectors for the fogs (Cali Special Fogs as well) It's an off the shelf kit from DDM, 4500k. Unfortunately (ish) the color of them pretty much does away with the yellowness in the light color, and goes for a very crisp white. It's clearly a different color than the headlights. Further more, the cutoff band on the lower projectors also has a fairly thick cut off line, that is smack dab in the realm of blue/purple.

So, it makes them look even bluer than the stock headlights, as it approaches down the road. So I'm going to try replacement D3S bulbs from DDM Tuning that are also of their 4500k range, simply for the slight color change. I've had multiple kits from them in the past in different cars, and the 4500k is the closest to OEM, but the color still is shifted completely away from having much if any yellow spectrum in it.

Basically I'm just wanting to see the results from those that have done the same or similar with factory HIDs, and or California Special fogs in their 10+ cars.

I would have just tried Sylvania ZXE or Silverstar Ultra headlight bulbs.

HIDs are cheaper and more effective than Silverstar's. :-\ 2-3 times the luminary output. H11's output around 1250 lumens, while a HID equivalent will output around 3200 lumens on average. This is also about lighting improvement, as much as it is for color. I know i will give up about 200 lumens at most shifting from OEM 4300k to aftermarket 4500k, but I want the light to be as usable as possible.

I have ddm 5k in my cs fogs and love them ... I changed the factory hid to a 5k bulb and they looked great too and matched much better. Only problem they cut out after about 10 minutes and I had to keep turning my lights off then back on so I returned them - I bought those bulbs from stang mods. Haven't found a replacement set yet and actually considered ddm for the d3s bulbs.

If you do go that route let me know how they work out!

Wow that's odd. I've never had an issue with DDM's stuff yet. Though I read in the past of people having QC issues. Hopefully it works out okay. Did you have any weirdness with the cutoff band on the projectors? That blueish purple band is THICK.

The ddm kit is fine - the bulbs I bought from stang mods and installed in the factory oem hid housing is what I had issues with.

I agree that the cutoff is very blue/purple and relatively thick on the California special projector fogs. It was less noticeable when I had the 5k headlight bulbs.

Yes, but they also sell bulbs, and can answer your questions with a lot of experience behind them.

I've had nothing but issues with DDM when I was modding jeep wranglers. made them tons of business too. The stuff was so cheap and replacement parts came from china...

I have DDM kits in my Mustang and Escape. On the Mustang, it is a high/low kit (single bulb) but they sent me the wrong harness. It was for a 9004 not 9007. Apparently the shape is the same though, so they told me to just switch the wires in the harness. I wanted a new harness but they wouldn't send me one, insisting they'd just do the same. I ended up doing it myself, but it wasn't the order they told me. So I moved all the wires around at least twice until I got the configuration to where my high and low beams worked.

On the Escape, it's a low beam only kit, but sometimes my left light turns on then flickers off. I have to turn the lights off and on at least 3-4 times before it stays on. However, I found that if I turn the lights on beFORE starting the engine, it stays on every time. So I haven't bothered with their customer service on that issue.

The kits ARE cheap though...
