MMD Hood strut problem?

HI all,
I am trying to install the MMD hood struts but they are too long by about an inch with the hood supported by the prop rod, and they will not compress at all, with all my 180 pounds of weight, I cannot get them to compress.

Anyone have a suggestestion?? I don't want to clip them on and find my hood wont close!!

With them installed the hood sits higher than the prop rod sits the hood. About 1 inch as you said. Also I could not get my struts to compress before installing either but after they are on , maybe it's the angle but they will compress.. Then after the first time they compress a lot easier
