GT500 spoiler paint
GT500 spoiler paint
I bought the OEM GT500 spoiler and picked it up at my local dealer today. My car is Ruby Red and I'm hearing that getting it painted to match will cost about as much as the spoiler itself since it has the Tri-Coat paint finish. What's the general consensus on painting it satin black with a flat black Gurney Flap? The high end Challenger (SRT8) has a black spoiler, the Boss 302 has a black spoiler, the Camaro 1LE and Z28 have a black spoiler, etc. It seems the higher end models get black spoilers and the regular models get paint to match. Do you guys think a Ruby Red GT will good with a satin black GT500 spoiler?
If you are going with black stripes or wheels, then go with the black spoiler.
Mine was body colour and I changed it to matte black. Really changed the appearance of the rear of the car along with other mods.
Amazing what a little black paint can do to accent a car.
She looks different in every picture!

The last thing I want to do is pay to paint this thing to match, then change it to black later.
Also, there are plenty of other black items on the car. The 5.0 emblems were replaced with black ones, the windows are tinted dark, we have the Roush upper and lower front grilles and the entire splitter set. The rear also has the GT500 rear valence, so there is some contrast to the Ruby Red.

Best of both worlds.
That way you could go back and forth or if you ever trade up, some people don't like the black.
I speak from experience. That gt500 spoiler is a bltch to remove. Make sure you can live with it.

I'm trying to stay away from PlastiDip. I saw a car at a show last year where he used it and the parts looked horrible. The black was starting to look chalky and blotchy, almost as if there is no UV protection in the plastidip. The car only has 6k miles, so I want to keep it looking good.
I have two quotes for the paint from a shop that does high end paint work. He said that the tri-coat paint will be about $250 and the black will be around $150. He's doing the black in a satin finish and said that the finish will look even across the entire spoiler. I could do it myself, but I don't think it would look professional enough.
I know that AM has the 3D Carbon spoiler prepainted, but again, I'm going for the look. The 3D spoiler looks good as a spoiler, but when comparing it to the GT500 spoiler, it's not even close. Also, with the Gurney Flap molded in, it just doesn't look right. My son doesn't want knock off parts. He likes the original GT500 part.
Hopefully the shop will have the spoiler done early next week. We went with satin black. I'll post pics as soon as I get it finished.

My local Ford dealership doesn't have a body shop but they do have a bumper and small touch up repair on site. The guys that do the painting said that it would be about $250 for the tri-coat. I decided that a professional high end body and paint shop, providing prices the same as the dealers bumper touch up shop, would probably be a better option in this case. For a few more dollars, I could've gotten a carbon fiber spoiler, but I think the carbon fiber is getting too played out.
Well I got the spoiler back and installed it today. What do you guys think? The spoiler is done in a satin finish, not flat. The second picture makes it look flat, but that's because of the cloudy, overcast sky.

Like I said in the other thread nice job! It goes well with the lower plastics.
Looks great. I wouldn't worry about what other people say. One of the things I've enjoyed about being a Mustang owner is appearance mods. There's something very cool about making your car your own.
