Custom Wheel Caps
I wanted some completely unique wheel caps, so I got this idea (from KMC wheels) to make a wheel cap with a 3-dimensional 5-pointed star. After some thinkin' and searchin', I finally started the project.
Using google I looked around for a few hours for a five-pointed star that would fit on a wheel cap - at least 2 inches, but no bigger than 2-1/4 inches. I finally found some 2-inch faux-rusted metal stars for just $1.59 for a set of three. I bought four packs.
To make it easy on myself, I wanted to start with an existing wheel cap that had a removable insert, so I looked on American Muscle, and found these caps for $7 each:
The only issue I was facing was how to center the stars. I looked around, and found a guy in Rhode Island that could make me a set of disks with cut-outs for the stars (and that had some 3M tape on the back).
Finally, after three months of planning and prepping, I have a completed set of wheel caps. Prep included removing the centers on the SR caps, scuffing the chrome on the cap itself, placing the star disks in the caps, and painting the whole thing black. Next, I hand-sanded each of the each of the eight stars I used, glued one star to each cap, painted the other four Performance White, and glued them to the stars that were already on the cap. On Saturday, I put three coats of clear over the whole shooting match.
After a few weeks, I'll polish/wax them and put them on the car.

I hand wash the car every weekend. For the car show, I want to do a decent job cleaning the tires/wheels, and I was going to remove them to do it. I figured since I was going to do that, I'd replace the caps at that point. Since I won't be putting the caps on for another four weeks, the paint should be good and dry when I apply the polishing compound.
