V6 MPG results with Bama Tune and Airaid

Last week I installed a new Airaid and paired it with the Bama 87 Performance tune. Today I finally had a chance to really test it out on the highway.

My normal daily drive is pretty short and its always local stop and go. I think I see the Average MPG always reading out about 20 to 24 MPG. When on the highway I think its been 27 to 32.

Today driving at about 60 to 65 MPH for about 20 miles I was seeing an average of 38 to 44 MPG.

Normally before these mods when I used to fill the tank it would read out on the dash that I had 230 Miles until empty.

I stopped at a gas station after getting off the highway. It read 339 Miles until empty.
Pretty sweet results. Im wondering if anyone else here has seen results like this with these mods or similar mods?

Oh and one last thing. The iTSX tuner is pretty cool using the performance app on my iPhone. I may even take my car to English towns raceway park one night to really test it out.

Honestly, you can't go by what that dash readout shows. You need to run a few tankfuls through it and calculate the miles driven by the gas used to get a real MPG number.

If you try hard, most any 2011+ V6 can get the readout up that high.

dball584,

Awesome results! Obviously the dash isn't always dead accurate, but if it's just adapting to your typical driving habits with a typical route, I would say this isn't half bad! Next time log how many miles you actually run on a full tank and calculate your average mpg by hand. Do this with a couple of tanks and post back the results.

Thanks for posting this up, and for you support. Glad you're enjoying your CAI/Bama package!

Awesome job! Question on the tune -- do these V6 Mustangs get better mileage running 87 ocatne, or is it just that the 87 octane tune is milder, allowing for better mileage?

I'm not sure if you had a typo or I'm reading this incorrectly, but 339 miles to tank is not particularly good. That averages out to 21 mpg.

Lol good point. When I'm almost on empty, it takes about 13.5 gallons to fill up, which would give him 25mph, which is still lackluster at best.

Yea..idk. I personally only get 23ish combined, since I have 3.31 gears and 19" wheels and I drive it like it's meant to be driven.

That being said, my dash readout usually says about ~325 per tank at the beginning.

Also, it shouldn't matter how many gallons you actually have left in the tank, the dash is calculating it based on the whole 16 gallon tank.

True, I mentioned the gallons because when my tank says I have 20-30 miles left, I'm around 13-13.5 gallons. So I guess if I drove it right to the limit I might be at 14.5-15 gallons. I also have the Performance Package so I know what you mean, but if I had 2.73s and an 87 tune trying for mileage, I would be pissed.

I would not recommend gauging your mileage by anything other than gallons from a full tank in over miles actually covered. The read outs are nice but pretty inaccurate. Combined highway and street are about 23 for me but I can be Captain Leadfoot at stoplights. Pure highway, steady state, I am close to 30 with a manual transmission with a base model set up.

Sorry to tell ya, but you won't. The 29 mpg is for the manual, but that's with the 2.73 gears. With the 3.31s I get about 25mpg highway, and about 17mph city.

Yup, that's exactly what I get. If I'm just going along on the highway between 65 and 70 and really babying it i can get 26. But if I'm driving aggressively i see more like 23

The 3:31s really make that much of a difference?? I can EASILY get 30+ mpg at 75mph. No joke. Only mods are CAI and axlebacks which should make no difference (in power or mpg, just sound!) 6th gear at 75mph is under 2000rpm which makes a happy motor.

I'm the same, Airaid CAI and Flowmaster Axel Backs and although 1st gear is a bit sluggish, I'm in 2nd as fast as I can and away I go! I do love having a manual and with the AM short throw shifter and steeda bracket it is so much fun now

It's a big difference, but I'm told the difference between 19" wheels and 17" is noticeable as well.

When I'm in 6th I'm at maybe 2200, if I'm going 65. If I go 75 on the highway I'll get about 23 mpg.

Joe, what is this reference you make in regard to 17" vs 19" wheels, mileage-wise?

Yeah, if I had known that from the start, I would've just bought the GT. The idea of this car was to get good gas mileage and still be fun, but there's nothing fun about getting ****ty mileage.

wow that's lame, i got the v6 for good gas mileage too, oh well. I'm sure a tune will bring up the mpg some. if i average more than 20 combined, i'll be happy.

In regards to the wheel size, that has been posted in other threads so I just assumed it to be true because in terms of basic engineering it makes sense to me.

But I decided to do some research into it after you guys questioned it. The conclusion I found was that the larger the diameter of the wheel including rim and tire the more effort (i.e. fuel) the car has to put forth to turn the wheel from a dead stop. So what I was told is that large wheels will decrease city driving or stop and go on the highway, but largely won't affect highway driving once you get the car going.

If anyone else has any other evidence to refute this, please let us know. But that's what I gathered
