Steeda 87 Street Tune - My Review

I have a bone stock 2012 V6 base auto w/2.73 gears and is used for my everyday street driving. I started by ordering a SCT X3/SF3 hand held tuner with a custom tune file directly from Steeda Gus in Pompano Beach, FL. This is my first Mustang and my first ever tune. My review is coming after test driving 600 miles using Chevron 87 fuel with 40% city and 60% highway miles. My driving style is 95% modest with an occasional WOT. The goal of this Steeda 87 street tune was to bring out the best in all around drive-ability and nothing more.

The improved throttle response and transmission shift schedule were the most obvious changes. Shift firmness remains smooth and positive while remaining close to factory stock. The gas mileage is so close to stock that I can’t report any measurable +/- change. Additional file adjustments won’t be needed as it was spot-on as delivered. I didn’t think a (mild) 87 street tune could make my Mustang that much better all the way around, but it does. Mission accomplished. Thank You Steeda Gus!

thanks for your review! why didn't you get a cai to go with that tune?? Did you only get the one tune for 87 oct or did you get one for 89 or 93 oct also?

Thanks guys!

Glenn, I didn’t get the CAI as it wasn’t needed for the success of this type of tune. Which was basically picking up where the factory programming left off. Of course, the CAI can always be added on later if/when power mods become desired. I ordered just the 87 tune, perhaps I might try the 89/93 in the future. I’ll see how it goes ...

I'm curious how it compares to a bama 87 street? Will be getting a tuner soon and trying to think who to get it from. I'm sure the difference would be minimal. How much it run you? How much are the tunes? Or are they free?

CYCLON37, I don’t know how the Bama tune would compare as I’ve never had one. Choosing a mail order tune vendor is difficult at best as much depends what you expect/want/need from the tune and they do seem subjective. My own research into aftermarket tunes showed that most Mustang owners wanted tunes that:

A. Accommodate power mods such as CAI, gears, exhaust, etc.
B. Provided measurable HP/TQ results as seen on dyno sheets and/or track times.
C. Place performance on the cutting edge.

In my case ... I don’t have any mods and wanted a 87 street tune that addressed the awkward-to-me feel that my Mustang had with the factory programming. Steeda Gus was the only vendor I contacted who knew exactly what I wanted out of my tune and gave me the confidence to go with Steeda.

The retail price of a tuner with one (custom) tune was 389.00 and Steeda offers a TMS member discount. Additional tunes are 65.00, but I don’t have any experience with this option as my tune was “just right” as delivered.
