pros and cons of a higher gear ratio
Hello,
I am trying to decide which upgrades I want to do on the 2014 v6 I just bought. From what I have read, changing out the 2.73 gears for 3.73s would make the car feel much quicker. I really like the idea but I was wondering if it will be bad for higher speeds.
From my understanding of gears (which mostly comes from bikes), a higher ratio will have less power as I get moving faster. Am I going to notice that the car doesn't drive as well at higher speeds.
What are the pros and cons of increasing the gear ratio? I don't really care about top speed as I almost never go over 90.

Pros: will make the acceleration quicker in each gear, you'll rip through gears much faster
Cons: possible gear whine, less fuel economy, higher rpm at cruising speeds. If you were to track the car these may be a tad short at some tracks
with that said I have 3.73s on my GT and I love them on the street. You can go from 30 to 60 in like 2 seconds. And I'm not even joking.

My last car was a Dodge with a 4 cylinder . At 60 mph it was doing 2250 rpm. I changed from my factory optioned 3.31 gears to 3.73 gear ratio. I have an automatic transmission. Even with a 3.73 gear ratio my v6 Mustang is only doing 2000 rpm at 60 mph. Going from 3.31 to 3.73 makes it much faster, you'll poop your pants going from 2.73 to 3.73 . You will pull harder at "all" speeds. Our v6's will top out at the same mph with 3.73's as it will with 2.73's, it will just get there faster.
Anything lower than the factory optioned 3.31 gear ratio you will have to buy a hand held tuner so you can make the speedometer right. Finding a good gear installer could be a quest. I had my local Ford dealer do mine for $550 just for the labor. Good luck

I did this exact change with my 2014 V6. The car still drives fine at higher speeds, but I found that it hits a comfortable cruising speed in sixth gear around 70-75 mph instead of 80-85 mph with the 2.73 gears. It's rare that I'm on the highway, though. Around town the difference is amazing. The car has a much greater acceleration. Even with the small drop in gas mileage, I found it to be well worth it. It really unlocks what your pony is capable of.
