Intake with no tune. Running too lean?

Is anybody here running factory software with a cold air intake? I know i am.... Im running 91 octane and the Airaid CAI, but no tune. I was notified by a few members that i may be running too lean and am in risk of damaging the engine. Whats everybody's take on this? I know that sometimes while idling ive heard my car make a sound as if for a about 1 - 2 seconds a small burst of oxygen came out the exhaust, kind of like a sputter. This does not happen all the time, but it does happen every so often after idling for awhile. Whats your take on this, am I in danger of causing damage?

Car is a 2011 mustang v6

Note: On the american muscle website it says the airaid system does not require a tune.

What are some of the symptoms of running too lean?

Should i switch back to 87 octane right away?

Thanks in advance

Answered on AFM.

And the octane makes no difference.

The Airaid intake can be run without a tune. You're perfectly fine running it without a tune, you're just not gaining as much power as you would with a tune.

ive noticed that after a start up of the car, when it is idling at its normal RPM and i give it the slightest touch off throttle and then let off .... the RPM's drop to below normal... and the engine almost dies and shuts off for a second... then it goes back to idle RPM... i can keep doing this... give it the slightest hint of throttle... then let off right away... the engine will nearly die and shut down... anybody have a clue as to whats going on?

Only 2-4 peak HP difference with a tune, a little more in the mid range.

This is on a V6 car, not a GT.

So it's like I said - not gaining as much as he would with a tune.

You don't mention if you are but you MUST have the insert in the airaid if you are not running a tune as it will run too lean and the MAF will not be able to function properly. I ran my 5.0 with the airaid and no tune for a while with no problems. Once I put a tune in I had to remove the insert.

Funny.... CAI and a "tune".... 2-4 "peak" hp..... I bet one could really feel that in the back when pushing that throttle to the floor!!!

There is no insert for the V6 Airaid intake.

To me it sounds like your worrying your self for no reason. A simple cold air intake is not going to mess your car up. It's a tube with a filter on it. The stock version is a tube with a filter on it. Biggest difference between the two is aftermarket gets rid of all the baffling and creates that whistle. So I say stop worrying and drive the car.

With no CEL the control system is not seeing a problem so no worries. If it were running lean, the cel would come on and let you know there's a problem.
