GT500 Exhaust on a V6
GT500 Exhaust on a V6
I posted this on the 11 to 14 forum, but thought I'd place it here as well in case some don't frequent that side of this site.
I had installed a Roush catback setup on my 2011 V6, but could only stand it for about an hour before I removed them and went back to the stock setup; just too loud for me. Last week, I bought a set of GT500 mufflers from the classifieds here, and took them to my local muffler shop to have my stock V6 muffler tubes welded to the GT500's, since the V6 tubing is smaller than these GT500's. The pics show the installed setup on my Mustang. The larger tubes fill out the rear defuser openings nice, and the sound is great! No cruising speed noice (quiet), yet the idle and excelleration have a sweet sound. Not obnoxious like other catbacks out there. All in all, I have much less invested than what can be bought. Here's a sound clip of another V6 that installed this same setup (GT500's), and the pics that follow are my Mustang with them installed. The second pic shows the muffler shops mod to make the stock tubes fit the GT500's muffler inlet (simple flare and weld):

Do you find a big difference in the sound? I see that LMR has GT500 exhaust on sale for $280 right now. I've been thinking of doing what you've done.
What are your opinions of it after having it for 2.5 weeks?
Also, do you feel you've lost any power. Someone has stated this on another website.
"Exhaust systems are designed for a specific engine power ouput. Putting an exhaust designed for a 600+ HP engine on a 300ish HP system will actually likely cause a loss in power output."

I've been looking to do this mod for my '13 V6 Mustang. I'm debating finding 2011 or 2013 mufflers. I know I'd have to do the new rear valance for the '13 mufflers to fit. Can you upload a better video (higher quality)? The link you put up there doesn't do it justice probably.
Thanks!
Thanks!
To be honest, that wasn't my video! I heard these on another 2012 V6 at a weekend car show (small gathering) and liked how they sounded on the V6. I had made a huge mistake a year ago by buying a set of Roush axle backs. As I stated (several times) in other posts, those were not for me. Quickly sold them and waitied another 7 months before I bought again, and heard them first hand before making a purchase.
Since exhaust sound is subjective and biased, it's best for you to hear it upfront before making up your mind. Everyone has an opinion and suggestion. Only you can decide what you like.
There's always a set of some manufacturers cat back exhausts for sale in the classifieds...only a few are because they sold the car...

Way too obnoxious loud! After installing on a saturday morning, the wife and I headed out to a lunch. The idle sound is nice with the Roush axle backs. This is where the pros end for me with them. As I idled out of the neighborhood onto a street, I accerlerated at a normal rate, and it was loud! Got onto the highway, and it was as if I had no mufflers at all.
To some, this will be what you want. For me, heck no! I drive almost 200 miles round trip a day. I like to listen to some music, and avoid the cops on the highway. I like the sound of a good exhaust, but not what the Roush gave. To each his own. I like the sound that the GT500's provide.

$50-100 depending on the area. Shouldn't be ANY more than that.
