I wanted as loud and free flowing as I could get (and still pass emissions) so I went with the Pypes Cat Back Mid Muffler (M-80s) Exhaust, and then later on switched to the BBK Long Tubes and Shorty Catted X-Pipe. My exhaust went from quiet, to a little loud, to very loud. The point being here is if you plan on modifying other parts of your exhaust in the future consider what the car will sound like with what ever exhaust you put on it now (be it axle/cat back etc) down the road also.... or you may end up having to switch exhausts again.
exactly what happened to me. i put on the bassani axle backs and then i put on long tubes and cattless x pipe and it made it crazy loud. so now im on the market for a quieter cat back exhaust. although i did get the bassani axle backs on a trade so i didnt really loose money like if i would have bought them new.

I was worried about the same thing throughout the process since there was a gap between the time I put the cat back exhaust on, and the long tube headers/shorty catted x-pipe. I was even more worried when I heard how loud it was when we did a rev test with just the new headers on. But I am fortunate in the end I am happy with the final result. There is a little more drone than I would like, but beyond that its loud enough to put a smile on my face every time I start it. I actually got the best compliment yet today from a black 4.6 S197 owner while in traffic near I-485 on the way home from work, "That is the best sounding V6 I have heard". Trust me, it could have been very different if the exhaust ended up too loud; going back to the original point of planning ahead when doing your exhaust.

I put Gibson Axle Backs on my V-6 and could not be happier....and they were the least expensive alternative I came across. Sound preference is very subjective....what some like others hate...or dislike.....sound clips on line are not always the best way to tell....but if you listen to enough of them you can get a pretty good clue....I like the Gibsons because you have no drone...they are not obmoxiously loud....but sound authoritative for a V6

Where did you find the Gibson Axle Backs? I found a few websites selling them but Gibson's actual website only list ones for the 5.0. I heard a clip of them and think they actually sound really good for the price and was not aware they were even an option.

I ordered them from their website.....they dont list them for some reason but they do have them....They are great quality and fit was perfect. I love the sound.....I listened to hundreds of sound clips before making the purchase but the few I heard of the Gibsons always sounded best to me. Sound is a very subjective thing. These sound great at idle and supurb when you get on the throttle.....And they were alot cheaper than anything else out there....bonus.
