Budget Brake Upgrade for V6 cars

The upgrade is to use the caliper brackets and rotors from a 2011 GT to upgrade from the 12.4" rotors to the GT's 13.2" rotors.

The rotors and brackets can be had new from Ford for less than $300.

This idea got chewed up some on another forum, worthy or not is up to you, I'm just putting the idea out there for consideration.

It would be a bolt-on deal with no need to crack open the hydraulics so it would be an easy swap.

One other thing to buy is new pads to go with the new rotors.

Also, this probably won't fit the stock 17" wheels so that is another consideratioin.

I definitely think it is worth looking into considering brake upgrade kits are typically way more expensive. I really think all you need are the caliper brackets and you could also go with some after market slotted/drilled rotors of the same size if you so chose.

Ford Racing Kit from AM is $149.95. This is the V6 upgrade kit to the 12.4 for the 2005-10. http://www.americanmuscle.com/ford-r...de-0511v6.html
And for $1400.00 you could go up to 14 inch 4 Piston SVT brakes.

2011's already have the 12.4" rotors and you could really jump up the size of 05-10 V6 cars by putting the 2011 GT rotors on.

And I have seen the brembo brake kit as low as $1100 if you shop around. Of course then you are even more restricted as to wheels.

The GT rotors and brackets and a good set of brake pads should make your V6 car stop on a dime and give you nine cents change!

Now to see if I would need the backing plates, I know going to the 12.4 on my 2010 I don't, but the extra almost half an inch might put it outside the backing plate. Not a big problem since they are listed for $10 from Ford
I would imagine on the 2011 V6 the backing plate is already the same as the 2011 GT like it was for the 2005-10.

Yeah, going from 11.5" rotors to the 13.2" might need different backing plates, although they aren't absolutely necessary I guess.

Chewed up is an understatement : ) working on the summer rubber first, then this brake upgrade looks like a sure thing...

Yeah, I'm doing the same thing. Waiting for the stock tires to wear out before I replace the wheels, but why not do the brake upgrade at the same time? I'm at odds though on whether to go 18 or 19". I had 19s on my Z and had all kinds of road rash issues just from daily driving and of course it made the ride a little harsher.

18's are the way to go.

Better ride, handling just as good or better than 19's, and less cost than 19's for wheels and tires.

I'm **** about speedo accuracy, so if I go with the 235/50/18's I'll couple with a tune so I can correct the error. So I think my order of upgrades this spring will be tuner, tires, and brakes.

Might as well go with 255/45/18's instead of the 235/50's.

In that case I'm thinking Drag DR34 or TSW Nurburgring wheels. Not sure which is the better wheel. I think Drag only has 18x8s but I could go 18x8.5 or 9 with TSW.

You might want to look at the SVE Tenth Anniversary 18x9 wheels. Good looking wheel on a 05-11 Mustang and they have them with black, bronze and anthracite centers with a polished lip. And they will even clear Brembo brakes so plenty of room for upgrades.
