3.73 gears

I'm looking at the 3.73 gears and I have a stock v6 2013 manual and I want some more power at lower speeds.. Will these gears make much of a difference or should I look at some other one? And do I need to get the installation and bearing kit if a mechanic is going to install? Or will they have that at their shop? I've also heard about the 3.31 gears but I want to see a difference any ideas?

Scroll down the page with all the threads ( under the V6 modifications of course ) and read the thread "New Gears". Tons of information on 3.73 gears and gears in general in that thread

My car came from the factory with 3.31s. I can tell you it all come down to personal choice which is why there are so many gear options. The other thing to consider is whether or not you can find a place that will do the job right for a reasonable amount of money. I waited a year and a half trying to decide if I really wanted to change gears or not. I was willing to sacrifice a couple MPGs for better performance. I have no regrets and my MPGs didn't drop that much since I routinely get 28-29 mpg.

As for the performance, all I can say is that it was definitely noticeable coming from 3.31s, and it changed my car's personality. If you're coming from 2.73s, your MPGs will drop a lot more, but you'll be surprised by how much faster your car is. I have started reclaiming MPGs with some other mods like my driveshaft. I think my BBK throttle body has helped a little too. A lot of guys complain about the mpg drop, but I can tell you that it is very difficult to drive economically because you keep wanting to get that abrupt acceleration sensation.

I actually just got 29.91mpg on my last highway trip. Not sure if it was a fluke or not, but I haven't seen that high since I had 3.31s.

I had 2.73s and got a free install of some 3.31s. HUGE difference! Best mid way point of power and MPG. For me to go to 3.73s and drop to 25-26 hwy mpg isn't worth it. I'd get a GT and gain 115 hp. I know the GT has a lower city mpg of 16 but I'm fine avg 19-20 overall with 420 hp under the hood. Right now I get 21-22 avg in my 6 so again for me it's all in the hwy mpg so that's why I'm sticking with the 3.31s.

I think it was around 150-200 to install the 4.10's in my 04 GT.

Can you just go to any local mechanic? And do I need to buy the other kits for the install?

Yeah there should be a install kit that includes all you'll need for the install.

Could you tell the difference after they are installed?

I can get it done for $225 (if I supply the parts) at a local Mustang performance shop. If I let them buy the parts, it's $400.

More important than price is finding someone with plenty of experience. It's very easy to get a bad job done.

For sure, factory gearing in a 04 is 3.27 so it was quite a jump.

I ordered my '14 with the Track Package (which includes the 3.73 gears)...

The thing I'm wondering is, in the bumper to bumper traffic I hit every day will I be able to stop-and-go in 2nd gear (because I have a feeling 1st is going to be almost impractical in traffic with the 3.73 in the back)?

Anyone running the 3.73 in traffic? If so, what's your experience?

You can do either or, normally just depends on how long I plan to be stopped there.

What else do gears do to your driving experience?

Gears are just a torque multiplier, gives more of that acceleration sensation, seat of pants and such.
