2010 V6 exhaust help/suggestions

I am going to try and get exhaust for my 6 this week or next. I had originally wanted to either remove my cats or get hi-flow ones, x-pipe, long-tube headers, and flowmaster 40 series. but I'm not sure how good that would sound in person.

I have been looking at getting either an X or H pipe, having an exhaust shop fab me another mid-pipe and then put either dual Mac axle-backs, FlowMaster 40s, or Flowmaster AmericanThunders. I was really leaning towards the Mac, but they're pretty expensive and I think the 40s might sound better. I just don't know what the best option for me is.

No cats, PaceSetter longtube headers, 40 series:

Mac axle-backs (Sounds a little high pitched):

FlowMaster 40 series:

American Thunders:

I'm really liking the FlowMaster 40 series. What do y'all think?

The FlowMaster 40 series sound like a great choice. I can't believe how much that PaceSetter link sounds like a V8 though. I think the Ford Racing FR500S exhaust for the 4.0 V6 sound fantastic as well. It's just an audio link on the page below. Look for the "play button".

Gosh! Now you've got me even more confused. I love that FR500 kit. But, gah. $1,000? I'm leaning more towards the either the 40s, American Thunders, or (now) the FR500s.

And I know, I couldn't believe how deep it sounded. I would get that for sure if there wasn't that thing about emissions tests and stuff. :/

Best deal on a true dual exhaust for the 2010 V6 is from www.newtakeoff.com they have a cat-back kit with a x-pipe and GT takeoff mufflers for about $325.

Wow, that is a good deal! But, i don't like the way the GT takeoffs sound on a 6. I was thinking about having a shop fab me some 2.5" mid pipes for the driverside and getting an H-pipe and then then american thunders. I guesstimate around $400 for all that.

ADD: Nevermind, I forgot I'm going to need a new rear diffuser. Ugh.

I actually like the GT takeoffs on mine, quiet until you get on it and lets you know when you do

GT500 rear Valance is not that much more than the GT and IMO looks better.

See if newtakeoff will sell you just the pipes fom that kit and then any 2010 GT axle-back will work with it.

Any muffler shop pipes you get will be crush bent unless you spend a lot of $$$ to find a shop that can do mandrel bending.

Even if you just buy the newtakeoff kit and don't use the mufflers it will be cheaper than anything else you can get done.

And there are always take off GT rear valances on ebay cheap, or you can getb a GT 500 valance new for about $150 shipped.

Yes, I love the looks of the GT500 diffuser. I asked my parents when they odered the Grille Surround for my front conversion if Ford charged them shipping. They said no, so I may order either the GT500 or GT rear diffuser. Depending on the way the exhaust goes. I've seen a few vids of in rides with GT take offs, and yes I certaintly like! ..But, I prefer something that growls at idle. Hahaha, just my prefrence!

Where'd you find it for $150 shipped? I looked at a website it said $150 with like $125 shipping. Hahaha, Not gunna happen! Like I said, I may order it from ford.

My dad is good friends with owner of a exhaust shop here in town. He's going to see if he has any takeoffs from an 2005 Mustang GT that he did recently. I don't know if he replaced the midpipes on the '05 but, hopefully he did and still has them. Even if he didn't, there is a junk yard a few miles away that has a wrecked '09 GT with front end collision. May look at that. Do you know if the midpipes from the 2005-2009 would work for mine?

Gosh, I know. After more videos I've seen. I think I'm going to go with the American Thunders. They sound great at idle and in low RPMs a little whiney after around 3k RPMs, but it's okay. Seems like it's the most resonable thing to do.

I'd try the 2010 GT500 mufflers on there. I'm sure you could pick some up cheap...

I paid around $90 for my left Over the Axel pipe from Ford. As for all the crush parts in the Ford pipe, unless you are going to slap a blower on it they will actually help with the back pressure preserving some of your low end torque.

Hmm.. Not a bad idea. I may look into that.

Wow, I didn't realize I could order the stock midpipe from Ford. Thanks! I think that's what I'll do. What brand of X-pipe do you have? I just want a basic x or h. It really doesn't bother me which one or which brand. Just something cheap! :P

I have the Pypes, it is $120 from AM http://www.americanmuscle.com/pypes-0509-v6-xpipe.html
BTW, find a dealer that will price match or sells online near you, the online prices for stuff is a lot better, like the GT500 rear valance is around $130 online but $150 at the dealer.

Ah, I like that idea! I may do that. So did you order just like the drivers side mid pipe from Ford for 90 bucks?

Try going no midpipe. Just piping all the way back to the mufflers (divorced duals is what the SN95 guys call this). I am running this way on my 2000 V6, and I find that it provides the deepest exhaust note out there for a V6. The X/H really smooths the exhaust note out. If that is what you are looking for, go for it. If you want a sound that is more lopey/sounds closer to a V8, go without a mid-pipe. Plus, it makes for super easy smogs since their sniffer is only reading 3 cylinders!

How can I not run a midpipe? I'm slighty confused. Like just run pipes from the exhaust manifold to the back into the mufflers? Or like run pipes from the cats to the mufflers? ..Is that cheaper?

I think he's suggesting no x or h pipe.

And yes, it would be cheaper, any muffler shop could do it.

Yes that^. V8s require a midpipe to smooth out pulses due to their odd firing order. V6s have an even firing order, so a midpipe isn't necessary. The only thing it does for a V6 is add a little back pressure and change the sound. I've ran my car with an H-pipe and now without one. It sounds better/deeper/throatier now. Same mufflers. And any Mustang V6s I've heard with X-pipes sound too smooth, IMO.

As far as I know, no one has done a divorced dual setup on a 2011 3.7 yet though. I'd be interested to see how it sounds compared to an X-pipe setup. For the 4.0 though, I think it sounds better without a midpipe. I did 2.5" piping, so I lost some back pressure, but it provided an even deeper sound. Let's be honest, I'm not racing my pretty much stock 200hp V6, so I couldn't care less. Plus, once I rebuild the motor and add a FRPP Whipple from an 03-04 Cobra, I'll need the bigger exhaust anyways!
