Strano Performance Shift Improvement kit: MT-82 Transmissions
Strano Performance Shift Improvement kit: MT-82 Transmissions
I've been messing with some stuff on my car, and found 3 things to help a lot. So I put the 3 together in a kit, and offer it at a bit of a discount.
You can follow the link, but basically I have put Steeda's Tri-Ax shifter, their Shifter base/bushing kit, and some Redline MTL together in a package and at a bit of a discount.
I can tell you all things helped my car tremendously. Might just be the MT-82 isn't that bad, but that the shifter and the mounting in the car sucks so badly that you end up with a vague mess. And it makes sense... the soft rubber stock bushing allows the trans to move all over. The baseplate on the stock shifter is a joke too. And MTL has always helped cars with iffy gear engagement work a lot better.

yeah I put the barton bracket on my car and that 2~3 shift has never been better. Happy for the time being with the stock shifter but also, adam at Joe Heck Racing has found that the stock clutch fluid line is also a fairly significant bottle neck causing poor disengagement of the clutch.
this was their solution to that

Without getting to much longer and more drawn out what we found was that the OEM line and fittings were ok for the first few times you disengage the clutch but because of the restrictions the slave couldn't keep up. Basically it's like the hydraulic fluid gets caught in traffic. It goes back and forth a few time but then starts to lag returning back to the clutch master and that's when the problems start. If there isn't enough fluid settled in the master it can't displace the slave completely.

Mr Strano puts time on these forum topics and that is awesome. I still need (want) a front sway bar so I may have to order some stuff from his shop. Thanks for sharing your real-world experiences. Based on your videos it looks like you give the MT82 all sorts of hell. How many miles have you racked up? How many "racing" miles if you can guesstimate it?
Well, anytime the car runs a ProSolo it sees a minimum of about 40 starts between the event itself, practice starts, and my co-driver. Two weeks ago the car had almost 50 runs on it. Each stage involves rolling into the lights, backing out (reverse), back in (1st) launching, and ripping the crap out of 2nd gear. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Sam, in all seriousness; In your professional opinion, Is the MT82 a piece of ****? Do you see Ford going with a Tremec or something similar for 2013 or are they going to suck it up with the perceived subpar transmission?
Lol u don't even have the mt82. I guess u are taking peoples words as gospel. I drive my car like I stole it and haven't had an issue...................yet lol.
I'm looking at the Steeda and Barton but not sure what to go with. Barton shifter says 40% shorter throw and Steeda 20%. Everyone has said great things about both with the feel but im not sure how the throw difference will feel
EDIT: I was looking at getting the BOSS shift **** and boot. Will it fit on both the Barton and Steeda?

I'm not going to knock the Barton it's nice part. However, the Steeda works great, I don't regret using it in my car, and it only got better with the new bushing. I don't particularly think the stock throw is hugely long, and I personally *HATE* when the throws are too short, makes me think I'm playing a video game with a joystick, not shifting a transmission. When I get to really banging gears, I need and want the feedback of moving the stick somewhere.
Is the MT-82 perfect? I don't know. I think the transmission might be getting some grief from things that stem from issues that aren't transmission related. I see how much better mine works now and didn't touch the actual transmission, or even the clutch.
No, this stuff won't change skip-shift that's electronically controlled. A tune can dump it, or you could just run the car harder in 1st. I never hit it, my ex-girlfriend did all the time.
Shifter is easy to install. Easy. They all install the same way, they kind of have to since they are all replacing the same part in the same place.

If lethal performance can take a stock MT82 down the quarter several times over and over with the whole body torquing I think it's a pretty solid transmission. Search their video "fastest MT82 in the country" and watch the car jolt and torque off the line. If this tranny can take that without issue, around town driving with occasional spirited driving is a walk in the park.

Ive been reading on another forum that MGW is still working on a shifter for the 2011 and that during his process of creating the shifter he is discovering that anything greater than a 20% reduction in throw resulted in too fast of a shift. I have been waiting to see what the outcome was with the final product and maybe a few reviews before I purchase mine. More than likely I will buy the shifter and bracket as a set. Also, get the Redline fluid as well since there has been more than one expert reccomend that fluid over the Dual clutch fluid.
I just did the redline fluid change today... My Trans was getting a "little" notchy on the 1-2 shift (Barton bracket, stock shifter). The MTL fluid has smoothed this quite a bit, at least from my short drive this morning.
On shifter throw, I agree with Sam... The stock throw is not outrageous. Keep in mind, the greater the throw reduction, the higher the effort and potential for rushing the syncros. Some guys like the rifle bolt feel....Personally I prefer defined gates and a resonable throw without compromising things internally... I think Steeda and MGW are on the money with a reasonable 20% reduction. I'm waiting for the MGW as it will replace the entire shifter and bracket assembly for greater precision, rather than just the pivot piece like the Barton or Steeda.
Sam's kit seems a good option though and addresses most of the issues.

Purchased this shift improvement kit yesterday because I'm having the 1-2 shift stiffness issue and also more frequently when shifting into third when the rpms are closer to the midrange I'm having a faint grinding noise nothing extreme but its noticeable. Hopefully this kit smoothes things out ill post a review of before and after as soon as all of it is installed.

I am really curious if the Redline MTL does help enough to make me change it out. Does anyone think there are any longterm effect with using the Redline MTL? I guess Im looking for someone to make up my mind for me on switching or not. I have almost 600 miles on it and dislike that notchyness feeling! Someone make up my mind for me lol. It will most likely void tranny warranty if I chang it right?
