stock muffler question

Hi folks,

Does anyone know if the stock 5.0 GT mufflers are the same as the Boss 302 mufflers? I have heard from some that the Boss 302 mufflers are the same as on the V6 cars, but with bigger tips...and from others that the GT mufflers are the same as the Boss 302 mufflers.

Reason I'm asking is that when I get my car I am considering adding the Boss 302 side-pipes ( restrictor plates removed, of course!! ), & I'm wondering if it will sound the same as a Boss.

Thanks

Ron

I owned a 2012 before getting my 2013 GT. It's very likely that OE GT mufflers are internally the same as OE Boss mufflers. IMO, the only difference is in the tips, and even though the outer diameter of the Boss tips are bigger, the OE Boss tips have a "tip inside the tip" to reduce the overall noise from the quad exhaust setup. So IMO, if you add the Boss quad exhaust to you GT using the OE GT mufflers, then it will be just slightly louder/deeper. I have the Boss quad exhaust on my GT with the side pipes "open", only I replaced my OE mufflers with a Magnaflow Street Series Axle-back (part# 15151), and it is much louder and deeper than my 2012 Boss was with "open" side pipes and its OE mufflers. Mine now sounds perfect to me.

That may be true for 2011+ V6 models. Below are the OE mufflers on my wife's 2011 V6 Automatic, and you can see them.

However, all Boss had them, and there are no automatic Boss, as you know. Below is a rear view of my old Boss, and you can clearly see them.

Below you can see the OE mufflers on my GT (an Automatic), and they do not have them. However, the tips are smaller, but not as small as the inside tips on the OE Boss mufflers.

and here's what my GT looks like from below and rear now, in case anyone is interested.

Thanks for the info fellas! Greatly appreciated! I have a few months to figure out exactly what I am going to do, but the Boss 302 side exhaust is just too cool to pass up!
