Snow tire size question

2013 GT has 235/50/18 pirelli tires on it. I found some pretty nice used Ice xi2's but the size is 235/45/18, less than a year old, 85% tread left for 400 bucks. The guy at discount tire (who has a gt) was beside himself telling me that they would look bad, etc. He wanted me to get 225/55/18's ws70's from him for about 700.

What do you think. Gonna just switch the tires on my current rims until I find some I like.

I'd run the 235/45/18 for the savings in money. Will they be a tad taller? Yes. Big deal? No. They are snow tires they aren't going to look real sexy any way you shake it.

My bad they won't be taller they will be a bit shorter. Once again though I wouldn't let it deter me from saving a few hundy.

They'll be nearly an 1" shorter so it will be noticable.

I can see where discount tie would want to sell you new tires. Your speedo will read 65 but you will really be going almost 63mph. They will both have the same tread width. I would buy the used tires for 400 but at least check them with a tread depth gage before I bough them. For winter tires I always try to find something a little narrower than stock.

Talked to the tirerack guy, and he said they would "look" smaller, but would be fine. I got the seller down to 350 for the Ice xi2 bought last year, so I can't pass that up. Thanks for the advice!

I suggest you buy a well used Corolla and keep the Stang in a warm garage in the bad weather.

I have a set of 4 Blizzak snow tires, and the Mustang is surprisingly easy to drive in a few inches of snow with them on.

I grew up in Western PA, and learned how to drive in the snow in a RWD, full-size station wagon with a 350 V8. It's not hard if you know what you're doing. Every year I also go out to a big, open parking lot after the first good snowfall and practice! It helps!
