SCT Tuning Heart Attack!!!

Got my iTSX today and my Bama Tunes.

I have an Samsung 7" Tab that I never use so that will will be my dedicated interface that I can keep in Glove Box. The iTSX graphics looks much Better on my iPad but .. oh well.

I paired the Tab with no issues.

I was able to load the 91 Street Tune with no issues. Car started right up and I too it for a test drive. Felt like it pulled well compared to stock and of course the CAI sounds great at WOT.

I get home and decided to try the Performance tune. Also loaded tune with no issues. Not sure if its an iTSX thing or a 5.0 thing .. but my 2010 GT with the SCT3 loaded tunes MUCH faster.

I go for another test drive ... I'm thinking to myself that the Street Tune seems to pull harder ..and I also notice the Skip Shift Message is coming on. I could have sworn I did not see the skip shift light on the Street tune .. and I had asked for Skip Shift to be off in ALL TUNES.

So just to make sure I pull into a parking lot so I can reload the Street Tune and see if it pulls harder and see if skip shift light is on.

Well .. I go to load street tune over the performance tune and CRASH .. I get an error message saying something about ECM error return to STOCK. Of course my Cluster was lit up like a Xmas tree.

So I begin to go to the process of returning to stock and CRASH ... another error saying ECM communication error and the return to stock failed. Heart Attack!!

Cluster is still lit up and of course turning key off and on and I get no Start .. No nothing .. just errors and lights on the cluster.

I try it 3 more times returning to stock .. and keep getting errors. At this point I'm thinking its gonna be a crappy 3 mile walk home!!!

So I turn car off for a couple of minutes .. Open door to get interior to completely power off from retained power. And start the process aging.

HOLY CRAP .. it worked ... I got the car back to stock. Now keep in mind the 5.0 or iTSX is slower than crap so it was a nail biting five minutes watching the ECM get loaded.

I started car after stock loaded and it ran but of course idled like crap with the CAI. So I knew I had to load the tune to get home.

I loaded the Street Tune again .. and after an agonizing 10 minutes - 5 to save stock tune and 5 to load Bama Tune ... it succuessfully finished and I drove home.

I think I do like the street Tune better ... and the Skip Shift light DID come on ..so I'm not sure if the tune disables the solenoid (which I have unplugged) and leaves the light on ..or if Bama left the Skip Shift on. I already have a PM to BAMA about the Skip Shift Message.

MORAL OF THIS STORY: ONLY LOAD TUNES IN YOUR DRIVEWAY OR GARAGE.

I've had that exact same thing happen 3 times now, only difference is i'm using the regular handheld tuner.
That is a terrible feeling, i know what you went through!
Mine as well would not load the stock tune after several tries in a row, I then let the car sit for 10-15 minutes and tried again and it has always worked after letting it sit.

dmhines,

I'm sorry to hear about the problems with your device. We send out thousands of tunes a month, and occasionally we get a glitch here or there with the software/firmware, but we know between SCT and Bama, we'll get you taken care of! SCT can definitely send you a Firmware update if this happens again(or you can contact them directly & see if any updates are available). As far as the "Skip Shift Feature" we can't actually turn the light off, We can only disable the actual function. If you're unhappy with the results from the performance tune, shoot me a PM with your order # included. I'll have my head tuning specialist Mike Wilson contact you directly & look into your file with a fine tooth comb.

Let me know if you have any questions or need further assistance. If you would like immediate assistance, Our Bama Performance tuning specialists are here in the building Monday-Friday from 9AM-5:30PM EST and Saturday 10AM-3PM EST. You can hit them up directly at 888.226.9764 and they'll get you squared away!

Dan. I spoke with Zach this morning. He verified skip shift was still enabled in all my tunes. He disabled it and emailed me the updates this morning.

dmhines,

Great news, I'm glad Zach was able to hook you up. Let us know if there's anything else we can do!

monitoring data via a wireless connection is a good thing.

flashing a control unit via a bluetooth connection is good sales gimmick, but a bad idea due to RF signal interruption and bluetooth adapter failure. BMW tried wireless programming and dropped it in a hurry. All programming sessions are hard-wired.

its OK if your phone drops a call or wont pair correctly, but having a failed wireless programming session is just plain "courting trouble"

there is so much that can go wrong...

German computers are annoying, pretty much the #1 reason I traded in my GTI for a Ford.

I agree 100% with on this.

All it takes it one tiny bit of code to not get transmitted correctly and you find yourself in this situation.

The tune is getting loaded from the dongle not your phone. The tunes are stored in the dongle.

Even so, same issue. The tune data is being transmitted wireless from your phone to the dondle.
It happens time to time with everything wireless, not just tuners

Thats what we have checksums for. To verify complete transmission.

Does the tuner actually automatically verify this though?

I know in the Android phone/tablet world, when downloading new software/updates on your computer it is highly recommended to download a checksum program to verify the file was not corrupt from the download.
Same reason it is highly recommened not to download these types of updates wireless.

I don't know, just my thoughts on it.

if the tune is stored in the dongle then essentially tuning isnt wireless the device is just an interface

I never heard of or had a problem with an OTA update which is just that. Over The Air.
