Removed resonators from my GT yesterday

and FYI, I really didn't notice that much difference...I've got the GT500 Axlebacks and they're only very slightly louder. Still sound very good!

The stock exhaust is ~ 2 3/4" dia at the point of the resonators...I had them replaced with a section of 3" pipe welded in (the guys didn't have any 2 3/4" pipe in their muffler shop).

The insided of the resonator looks like a mini-glass pack muffler. Not sure what value it added to the original design. Removing them did offload a couple of pounds from the car however!

That's what I'm doing next. From the videos I've heard, there's a significant difference between stock and gt500s with no resonators.

Yeah it's amazing what a youtube video can do!

Anyhow, I still think it's worth doing...the resonators have a reduced ID of 2 1/8" so pulling it out of the 2 3/4" exhaust pipe is probably a good thing!

Please let us know if your exhaust volume results are 'wildly different' than stock!

Dan_H actually did the mod rather than just watching videos. I'd tend to believe him on this.

Dan,
I agree about the flow benefit if the resonators did choke the pipe down to 2 1/8".... that should help.

Did this save much weight? Honestly, I don't have a concept of how much the resonators weigh compared to a straight pipe.

I'm guessing they weigh about 3# per resonator so a guess-timate of 6# weight savings.

Thanks... not bad, actually. Every lb. helps...In lieu of a big sound difference, I'm trying to build a case to do this on mine. Sounds like it's probably worth it.

If you don't mind, what did the shop charge you?

$100 to remove both resonators and replace w/3" dia pipe. I've heard prices as low as $50 total but I asked my guys to do it in such a way that we could easily re-insert the resonators in the event the new sound was unacceptable. Also, they're a local shop and really good people (and they do good work) so that's worth additional $$ to me!
