For someone who does not usually work on their own car, is there somewhere I can learn how to do this myself?

I've had my 5.0 for about a week. The shift has already begun to stiffen and get notchy much like my V6 did. Shifting into 3rd I can feel the same symptom my V6 did before it started to grind

I have the barton shift bracket ready to install and planning on adding redline mtl with it.

I just ordered the Amsoil fluid. It doesn't matter if your car is tilted on ramps or stands when you fill it up. Just put in the 2.7qts and you're good to go.

I've tried the original fluid that came in the car, the new stuff the TSB called for and RP. The Amsoil seems to be the only one that improves cold shifting as well as the notchiness, from what I've read. I'll report back once I've done the swap.

I think you can't go wrong with either Amsoil or Redline MTL.

Anything is better than the stock crappy fluids.

One more thing I meant to mention. I don't think anything in the books calls for a friction modifier in the transmission. Rear end, sure. Could someone inform me if I'm wrong? Under what conditions would one need to use a friction modifier in the trans? I'd think this would do bad things with the syncro's over time.

Nope, no friction modifier in the trans. Only in the rear end.

Mike I have a pump that you can use to put the trans fluid in. It's very easy

Menards sells a pump for $5. I used mine once and it worked well. It fits quart and gallon size too.

What's the specific Amsoil oil you guys are referring to?

I'm curious how you find the Amsoil vs. the Ford TSB fluid, as the dealership told me that was very expensive stuff.

Right now I'm not sure whether to go the Redline or Amsoil route. I know both make good products in general from my time working at a motorcycle dealership.

Amsoil MTG. Sure, the Ford TSB fluid might be very expensive but it doesn't work worth a ****.

As per AMSOIL's website recommendation, it's 75W-90 Manual Transmission & Differential fluid. If I recall, it's been the same recommendation before the TSB.

I did the Ratstangrestoration method and added a dipstick to the pan, added Amelie(sp) trans fluid and new filter and now its smooth as silk. That Ford design is a PIA!

Put in the Barton shift bracket and Redline MTL after it popped out of 4th last night and grinded like a ****... also quite embarrassing as I was in traffic

The difference is night and day. I could see some metal shavings. I'm at ~1000 miles. The Ford stuff also looked toxic like others have mentioned. Horrendous smell and appearance, even though I know it's not supposed to be pretty.

Also unplugged the solenoid to get rid of that skip-shift, which sounds so bad with the Roush exhaust. It just sounds like a mis-shift and put in wrong gear.

Just wanted to share how excited I am.

Have a question though, I'm pretty sure I have close to 3 quarts of Redline MTL in my car, even though the spec is 2.7 quarts. Is it a big deal?

As long as you are at the proper fill line as specified in the tech guide you should be fine. I think I put 2.8 in mine.

Thought I'd share this. Over on S197, we've been discussing which tranny fluid is better and for what purpose. I'm not saying one performs better than the other but one works better in cold weather and another in warmer weather.

We've got it that Redline MTL works better for colder climates. Amsoil MTG is better for warmer climates.

have any of you guys tried running mobil 1 high mileage in ur tranny.... just wondering cause back when i used to own my srt4.... ed peters the chief engineer who designed the neon srt4 transmission. had a big tech talk about using mobil 1 high milage in the tranny.... now i know the mustang and the neon are two totally different cars... just curious cause all trannys are build using metal.... and well high mileage motor oil is thick to help lubicate and reduce friction....

What was the weight on the Redline MTL transmission fluid?
I have a 2013 6-Sp Manual with 3.73 rear. Is this the right transmission fluid for my car? If not, do you have any recommendations?

75W-80 is the weight on the MTL. I have had it in my MT82 for over 13k miles and it outperforms the stock QS crap. My transmission is butter smooth cold or hot and I really like it.
