Exhaust: sound difference between axle-back and cat-back Borla?

Ok, so I'm in that insanity phase of waiting for my car to be delivered with too much time on my hands...

I'm fairly set on S-types, for now I'm not really looking for any HP gains just sound. As I scour youtube I have found that my favorite videos of the s-types are both from cars with the full cat-back system. They sound much more throaty than the cars with just the axle-back.

My question is, do you guys think this is all camera mic quality? Or is the difference between the stock h-pipe and Borla x-pipe (both after-cats) really making the mark here?

Cat-back:

Axle back:

The only reason I'm asking is that the cat-back is almost twice as expensive as the already silly expensive axle-backs. Gotta have 'em though...

Where are you located? There is a used cat-back S-Type setup available for $750 ( I think ) on a local site around here. I think he's located a few hours from Pittsburgh.

...and I hear ya about the "insanity phase"...my car won't be built until sometime in March...hopefully...

The S type Borlas are my favorite as well. I went with GT500s without resonators for cost effectiveness and sounds amazing. The cat backs will give you an admirable increase in power if you tune the car. If you're not worried with power, I'd highly recommend the GT500s minus resonators. It sounds very much like S type axlebacks for less than half the price.

i agree on the GT500 with res delete.I wanted the Borla S but the funds were a problem so i went with the GT500 a/b with 3inch piping welded in place of the res and am happy as hell.

A couple hours in which direction? I'm in Maine myself but I have a friend in Pittsburg that could pick it up for me if it was in good shape.

I know, my order is still waiting for an allocation or something, I hope I can have it in the beginning of April but now I'm starting to think that might be ambitious.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, gt500's are currently 3rd on my list behind stainless works cat-back. They do sound great though, really have that chambered flowmaster-y sound, except better imo.

Here's the link - he's in Ashland, PA.

http://www.steelcitystangs.com/forum...ad.php?t=27496

If the shipping wouldn't be too bad you'd still come out ahead.

Register for the website to see the ad. I don't want to post up his phone # here - but here is what it says...

"2011-2013 borla s type catback
catback was on my car for less than 5 months, brand new aftercat x pipe. sounds excellent traded car in"

If you end up getting it, feel free to tell the seller that PaxtonShelby sent you his way. I had contacted him about the system, but now I'm thinking I'll either get the Boss 302 side-exit h-pipe or the 2013 GT500 quad-tip setup. I still have some time to think about it, as my car isn't getting built until March.

Well, I've made him an offer. Unfortunately he seemed somewhat unaffected by the mention of your celebrity Paxton, lol.

I didn't expect you to get a discount because of me - just wanted him to know I was trying to help. Remember, the axle back kit alone sells for more than he is asking for the cat-back kit.

Yeah, I know. I was joking, he gave a "oh ok" when I mentioned your username so I'm sure he's appreciative. You are correct on the price, however there is a certain amount of screwing around involved with getting it back to Maine that only makes it worth a certain amount to me. Namely, one friend picking it up on the way to work in NYC and then handing off to another friend who will then bring it up to me in downeast Maine.

Edit: almost forgot, thanks a lot Paxton for that connection I hope it works out!

I'm not fond of axle backs. I'm actually really picky with the sound. Want something quality? Go with stainless works. Their catback alone will blow you away, not only with the quality 3" stainless steel, but the sound blows other exhaust setups like the roush AB and GT500s away.

Hey fullahead - you're welcome! Hope it works out for ya! I'm just trying to pay it forward a little - I know how hard it can be to sell parts, so I try to get folks together to make a deal whenever I can.

Why not run both and make it sound killer from all angles!?

Trust me - I have thought about it. As much as I want to get upgrades done quickly once the car is here, I am trying to think things thru and not get ahead of myself. I really like the quad-tip 2013+ GT500 look and they sound great too - so that is at the top of my list. If I "need" the car to sound meaner I could always add the Boss side-exit h-pipe later.

An MGW shifter is at the top of my mod list as well.

I'm also really thinking about suspension upgrades, but since I'm starting with the Track Pack already I figure I should drive the car for a while before I pull the trigger on Koni Sports and Steeda Sport springs.

Tunes and FI will be more of an option down the road once my warranty is near it's end.

sounds like a plan. I think my first mod will be the quad borla s type exhaust with the gt500 rear valance. I too, love the look of quad tips and the borla s type just sounds so mean. Im hung up on the boss exhaust to, idk whether i should go with just an aftermarket H or go with the boss side exhaust and H. How free flowing in the boss's H?

I have the same ambitions for my car. GT500 rear valance is AWESOME, as is the Boss quad. Assuming everything works out and he doesn't sell it out from under me, I should be purchasing that used setup. This way, I get the exact sound I [think I] want and I won't be out too much cash if I decide to change it up later.

Plus, this way I should be able to have the exhaust and the MGW purchased before the car gets here.

Joey - I don't think you can go wrong with the Boss h-pipe. It sure doesn't seem to hamper the performance of the Boss! Plus the fitment will be perfect and it is all stainless. Still the GT500 axle back will be my first upgrade along with an MGW.

I just installed the s-types (I think, not sure if S or ATAKs lol). I have the catback but only installed the mufflers. And honestly, yhey sound almist EXACTLY like my roush axleback. Just a touch more refined. Overall I love them. Ill let you know how much different they are when the resonator-less over axle pipes and aftercat X-pipe go on. Most sound change I think will come from removing the resonators

I'm sorry...but I highly disagree. I had the GT500s for a year, and listened to many resonator-less setups both vids and in person. I "almost" went this route, but got the Borla S instead. And I'm glad I did, because the Borla S is hands down the best sounding mustang exhaust ever. Period. Couple that with exceptional quality and Borla research and customer service, it's game set match.

Anthony, congrats. I was thinking about going with the full borla cat back set up for the S type... but I might put that on hold, because I might be getting a Roush Phase 2 SC kit.... Again, it's still a "maybe". But it's driving me nuts. I can't stop thinking about it.
