Downshifting Hesitation...

Wanted to try collaborating with any other 2011/12 5.0 GT owners for a behavior I've run across (repeatable) downshifting as if to pass someone. Here is what I've observed; Cruise, steady-state at 3500 in 4th, quick downshift to 3rd, throttle to the floor. Engine hesitates as R's around 5000, then wakes up and continues on normally. (The tech needle swings instantly to 5K btw) My car has an Airaid CAI and Bama 93 race tune, with 3.73's and 6sp. Not that any of this should have any bearing on anything, it's just the current config of the car. Curious if any other owners can replicate (if they care to) and my thinking is telling me that maybe I am bumping a response limit of the variable valve timing system...or....limit of the ECU trying to reclock to such a swift shift in rpm/vehicle load? I dunno, but runs just fine in all other aspects I typically drive in though. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. Mine is a well behaved 6sp, the actual shift to 3rd regarding the transmission isn't the issue, it's the engines behavior to the downshift and sudden upscale rpm shift. Yes, could be the tune...but leaving other possibilities on the table also. This behavior may be there even in stock form. I never tryed a maneuver like that while it was stock...so, I'm reaching out to some other folks. You know, I just thought of something Sam Strano mentioned over a year ago that he told Ford about, and that behavior was biting him abit on the track. Wonder if this is loosly talking about the same thing? Hmm, maybe he'll run across this thread and comment.

With 3.73s and cruising in 4th, you should be around 60mph, stop cruising in 4th and shift man!

I have the same setup as you, and would test it out, but my car is in the shop....like always.

LOL, yes I know. I never cruise like that normally in 4th and 3500. I was running checks with gear selections and speed to see where I needed to be to make a downshift and hit close to the torque peak on the fly. In other words 'playing around'. That's how I stumbled across this hesitation (no pun). Texas! So am I.

Ahhh that makes sense then. BTW tried it out on the way home and had zero hesitation.

Mine is an '11 6sp man, NO TUNE with 3:55's. I did about the same playing and found no hesitation in the engine response. Mine was hard enough to bark the tires a bit to....
