Do the stock mufflers "break in?"
Do the stock mufflers "break in?" I've read that certain muffler designs (especially glass packed) can noticeably change. I'm wondering if I should expect a change in tone and/or volume over the first few thousand miles. I like the sound now, but a bit louder would be even better.

I installed a 93R tune with an Airaid CAI and she got noticeably deeper/better performance.
So I wanted even a deeper sound....always.
I installed a pair of BBK ceramic shorty headers/revised tune. Even deeper! But I want it DEEPER! I am thinking high flow cats and new xpipe is my next mod. I am working my way back.
undecided if I want to swap out the stock mufflers, I do like the FRPP(s). I think they offer a touring and racing set.

My short list includes the boss sidepipes, gt500's, and borla s types axle backs. But the more research I do, the more difficult the choice becomes ...

The GT500's are definitely louder then stock, and they get louder after about 5-10 thousand miles. The Borla S types sound really good, to me, but they are much louder then the GT500's. The BOSS side-pipes is a big change and louder then the other options you mentioned.

How would you describe the BOSS sound as different? I love the row rumble of the stock and other setups, but i'm also looking for more burble and "rawness" without being raspy or adding drone.
One of the things that atracts me to the BOSS setup are the restrictor plates. I could put them in for road trips and run them wide open for weekend joyrides and the track. Maybe install cutouts somewhere down the line ...

Couldnt hear anything with the stock mufflers when the car was brand new and still sounds totally silent now that they're broken in. The only noise I can hear is coming from the engine and only under moderate to heavy throttle. its tragic really.

The answer is yes the tone will change some as time goes by. Exhaust temps even at the mufflers is very hot. Constantly heating the metal of the mufflers and then cooling will change the tone in time. I've heard some stock mufflers actually get quieter and some louder. Just depends how the muffler design reacts to the heat.

Another vote for the GT500 mufflers. Great mod and pretty inexpensive. I love the sound. It's not obnoxious but you can stomp on it and really notice the difference. And do yourself a favor - paint the cans with black BBQ paint so you hide the udders hanging underneath.

I have a 2014 Track Pack RR, and I also think the stock mufflers sound great. I'm thinking Borla Touring AB - I want the low tone without the raspiness I hear in the louder setups. I wish Borla had a comparison to stock on their website - they only compare their three setups. I'm also undecided if I want to do the whole thing including the X-pipe or take the easy route and just do the AB. I'm not sure what you would gain other than getting rid of the resonators. I have to work with jack stands so I'm worried that I won't be able to get the over axle pipes out or installed.

I swapped for the boss H pipe and gt500 AB's at 10k - there was a very large difference in sound, and a noticeable POP and GURGLE during decel (and shifting at certain RPMs). stock exhaust is a compromise that doesn't work for those of us who want more - I'm running the H pipe with stock restrictor, going to open it up soon to 3/4" where I'm sure the sound will be amazing (open is too loud for me).
there are some on here who swear by borla and I'm sure bora is amazing, but it's louder... I find the sound with the boss H pipe can be modified to your liking.
I made a video of my setup after I had a few thousand miles on it and it's a decent video with realistic sound. I love the sound, and WOT is amazing... for the price (1k for all parts, new) I'm very pleased.

I just installed the Borla S-Type AB's yesterday and wow.....I can certainly say that the videos do not do it justice at all. I had GT500KR AB's on my '09 (completely different sound all together from the 5.0, I know) and it was awesome and loud but the sound the 5.0 puts out with the S-Type is unbelievable. It is very loud DB wise when you get on it, it growls with a hint of some raspiness but very contained. Also, I can creep quite easily as I discovered when coming home late last night without waking the whole neighborhood up. I promise if you spend the dough for the S-Type, you will be more than happy.

I have almost 13K miles on my car and the exhaust sounds way better now than when I first drove her off the lot. A little deeper and burbles more on decel. Not near the level of GT500's or anything aftermarket though. Still rumbles enough for me for the time being.
