ITSX and BAMA tune

Hey guys,

I just picked up an SCT ITSX unit and bama tunes from American Muscle. I loaded the 93 Race tune an di was not please with the results. With the ITSX i was able to measure a 5.4 second 0-60 with my stock tune. When I loaded the 93 Race tune the best I was able to get was a 5.6 second. I wasn’t having any traction issues and it seems that i have lost power 3500RPM and lower. Above that it does seem to pull a little harder. I was wondering if anyone else has had similar issues with BAMA tunes.

I am currently working with them to try to resolve this. I just figured i would check with you guys

odoyle84,

I am sorry to hear about the inconvenience with your tunes. It sounds like something is going on within the file, Our tunes are good 99% of the time. Occasionally there are small errors because we hand write each tune.

I am confident that my Bama team will fix the problem quickly, Majority of the time it's small human error when filing the information or by a Bama member.

I am glad to see you are already working with my Bama team to resolve this issue, Shoot me over your order # VIA PM, I will have my head tuning specialist Mike Wilson contact you directly!

You will be enjoying your tunes in no time, thank you for sticking it out with us while we get your issue resolved.

- Dan

Hello,

You should have no problems with a C&L air intake either. If you can't seem to find the gains you want from them just let us know and we'll be happy to help.

Thanks, Doug

Hi, I wanted to chime in here and ask some questions about the iTSX.
I, as well, have a 2010 GT automatic. My door jam has a "CG" axle code which indicates a 3:31 gear. I would describe my 1st gear has "useful" so I beleive that the code is correct. I will be using an ipod with the iTSX. Current mods, drop in K&N and axle backs.
With this configuration I had some questions:

Does the dongle or the device hold the tunes?

How do the tunes affect emmisions?

Will I need to load stock tune for obd/emmisions inspection?

Using the ipod will the device still be able to play music?

When reading DTC trouble codes, is that only for "sevice engine soon" light or can I do a performance scan to find things like misfire codes or sensor malfunctions?

when sync'd up with the ipod can I connect that to a laptop and use that app on the laptop to monitor performance or change tunes?

I read from a forum poster that '09 & up mustangs with automatics no longer had the
shift pressure modules on them and shift pressure is controlled electronically. With that being said I am satisfied with shifts at WOT, crisper shifts are not out of the question though. But I would like to tweak the way it behaves around town and negotiating intersections. I just wish the tranny was a little more "awake" when upshifting or getting back into the throttle. Is this something I can get from a bama tune?

Also does modifing shift pressure cause premature wear?

Obviously A CAI would give me more gains, is it necessary? also not out of the question.

american muscle/ bama please chime in because we can talk here or I can just call and bug you on the phone lol. I'm sure the readers wont mind either good time to start a useful iTSX thread

Does the dongle or the device hold the tunes?

The tune file is held in the Apple or Android Device you're using the iTSX app.

How do the tunes affect emissions?

This depends on the type tunes you are using, base files or custom. This is a direct question you need to ask whomever you purchase it from. From me at C&L Performance, we can write tune files that will pass emissions.

Will I need to load stock tune for obd/emissions inspection?

There again this depends on the tune files you get with it, we can include a tune that will pass but if all you have is the tuner on your car its just as easy to reload it to stock.

Using the ipod will the device still be able to play music?

The only time the device is used is for programming and that happens with both the key on and off so no driving while programming. Now for the datalog feature you can use a laptop using Liveload software to communicate with your iTSX. As for listening to Music while you have it connected, I'm sorry but I dont have any info for you there, never tried it nor has the person I spoke with at SCT.

When reading DTC trouble codes, is that only for "service engine soon" light or can I do a performance scan to find things like misfire codes or sensor malfunctions?

Yes, all general OBD2 monitors will be scanned during a code check. Now there are some Ford trouble codes that it will not read but those are usually more in depth. It will show misfire codes and other general codes.

when sync'd up with the ipod can I connect that to a laptop and use that app on the laptop to monitor performance or change tunes?

I would like to tweak the way it behaves around town and negotiating intersections. I just wish the tranny was a little more "awake" when upshifting or getting back into the throttle. Is this something I can get from a bama tune?

I can give you shift firmness and shift points selections on the customer options but better yet I can first give you the best automatic tune and then if you have questions I can further adjust it from there. There's no question that I have this trans files mastered on the 05-10 cars. It's not until 2011' that they went to the 6 speed auto.

Also does modifing shift pressure cause premature wear?

Too much can kill any trans but actually increasing it a small amount can help it as a smooth shift performed by slipping the clutches inside the trans and this builds up heat. By reducing the time that it is slipping them it reduces both heat and wear.

Obviously A CAI would give me more gains, is it necessary? also not out of the question.

Our C&L air intake for your 2010 car has both a no tune required option as well as tuning required. As with ANY cai you're going to gain the most with the Tuning required version along with a tune but just make sure not to go too large.

Our 2010 " Tuning required kit" max MAF size is 95mm which is a great size for these cars and has the ability to grow with your mod list. We have customers using them with Saleen s/c cars. Anything larger and you may run into low RPM maf resolution issues because the airflow across the MAF isn't enough to be pulled through that setup and allow the maf to read accurately.

We also redesigned our intake pipe for a better flow design and proper body fitment as the 05-09 kit requied the airflow to make a 90' turn before it entered the TB. With the new body design we're made our tube a more gradual turn into the TB without any sharp curves. This makes our C&L kit outflow the stock assembly as well as any other on the market that utilizes the sharp turn into the TB on the 2010 versions.

Just let me know if you have any other questions I can help with!!

Thanks, Doug

Thanks for your post. Let me see if I can help clear things up for you!

1.) Does the dongle or the device hold the tunes?

The dongle is just a bluetooth connection to your Mustang's OBD-II port. The tunes are actually stored on your Android or Apple iOS device, and then you can download your stock tune and upload those tunes wirelessly. You can also datalog, read/clear check engine lights and anything you'd normally be able to do with a wired programmer.

2.) How do the tunes affect emmisions?

Our Street and Performance tunes are emissions legal, and leave all sensors and switches function, unless you specify otherwise (off-road pipes, for example). You'll be able to pass inspection/emission as long as you complete your drive cycle, by running the tune for approximately 50 miles or so of mixed driving.

3.) Will I need to load stock tune for obd/emmisions inspection?

You'll be able to keep either the Street or Performance loaded into your vehicle and still pass emissions testing.

4.) Using the ipod will the device still be able to play music?

No problem rocking out, still! The only time you'll have a problem listening to music is in the middle of flashing the car, datalogging or actually using the SCT app.

5.) When reading DTC trouble codes, is that only for "sevice engine soon" light or can I do a performance scan to find things like misfire codes or sensor malfunctions?

The DTC codes are check engine lights or wrench lights. In the even that you were to have a code thrown (MIL), you'll use the iTSX in order to read the check engine light and then even clear them if you'd like.

6.) When sync'd up with the ipod can I connect that to a laptop and use that app on the laptop to monitor performance or change tunes?

I don't know the answer to this, honestly. It's not very common. You may or may not be able to hook your iOS device up to an Apple computer and use the app, but I'm not sure. I know that these work with iPad's, though - if what you're after is a bigger screen.

7.) I just wish the tranny was a little more "awake" when upshifting or getting back into the throttle. Is this something I can get from a bama tune?

Bama tunes will absolutely liven up that automatic transmission! You'll get all around better performance driveability. All of the tunes will respond a little bit differently (Street, Performance and Race), so I'm sure you'll find one of the 3 that is perfect for your style of driving or commute. That being said, if you purchase the tuner (or a CAI and Tuner) from Bama, you'll get Free Tunes for Life, so we can always take special requests and tweak the trans to shift however you want!

We're really good at the automatic transmission, and have been hitting it hard for years, now. We've had one of the fastest 2011 V6 Autos in the country, a mid-10 second 2011 GT automatic and countless others that were able to be docile on the street and banging gears like crazy when you step on it!

8.) Also does modifing shift pressure cause premature wear?

The shift characteristics that we use in our tunes are definitely safe to drive everyday as well as powerful on the street/strip. Wear and tear can definitely still occur, but not more than if you were beating on the car in stock form. Nothing we do will add enough pressure or change the way that your trans operates enough to damage it alone. You'll actually notice quicker/firmer shifts that should, if anything, slightly help tranmission longevity.

It's probably not noticeable/negotiable though.

9.) Obviously A CAI would give me more gains, is it necessary? also not out of the question.

Cold air intakes aren't "necessary", but I really think it adds a ton of value. They change throttle response, the pitch/tone of your exhaust, add power, add gas mileage and they just look cool when you open the hood! I think a CAI/Tuner combo is pretty much a foundation mod, and it just does more and more for you as you add other "air" mods to the car such as high flowing intake manifold, exhaust, etc.

We do offer combo kits with some of the best intakes on the market including Airaid, JLT, Steeda, etc. I think you'll be really happy with one of these combos, and it's a great way to add tons of performance in only a few minutes.

If you need any help at all, feel free to shoot me a PM or even talk to one of our Bama Performance tuning specialists directly. They'll be able to give you an exact idea of the parameters we change, dyno results from our customers, etc. Any info you need, they're here to help out Monday-Friday from 9AM-5:30PM EST and Saturday 10AM-3PM EST. You can hit them up directly at 888.226.9764 and they'll get you squared away!

I wonder if odoyle has isolated a tune that is working?

Thanks for the replies guys. A friend of mine has a raptor truck with the cool automatic gear box similar to what the new mustangs have. I have driven the truck a couple times I remember thinking how I wished my car had that, then I saw the new ones...kinda jealous.
The stock tranny tune on the mustangs is just kinda funky to me, Im sure you agree, My influence for tuning is to wake up the tranny and it looks like yaw are on top of that.

Has far as connecting device to laptop I seen a guy do that with a sct power flash and was wondering if that would work with the iTSX but after thinking about it with the iTSX features that would be kinda redundant.

Bailer, When you mentioned drive cycles, whenever a tune is loaded, stock or not, the car needs to cycle before inspection? Or just when going back to stock? ...and you kinda sold me on a CAI. Which leads me to an important question:

When doing "air" mods, to any car, it is to my understanding that without a tune it can cause the air/fuel ratio to get out of spec and cause long term losses and wear. Will the tunes compensate and keep the A/F ratios stoich and in the sweet spot?

The motor in the 2010, 3V VCT, when the cam kicks in at elevated rpm's, does this effect produce more gains after tuning?

flashpasta,

The drive cycles are important for building KAM memory in your PCM. You need to complete these cycles for any tune you upload. During inspection, the shop plugs into your OBDII port and reads the KAM memory, which indicates how well your emissions accessories/engine are performing. There needs to be enough accurate KAM memory to pass the emissions testing. When you drive for 50+ mixed highway/city miles, you'll have more than enough recorded KAM memory to pass, assuming everything is in order.

"air" mods- you pretty much have it right on. Your MAF calibration needs to be adjusted for the higher volume of air flowing past the MAF, in order to output a safe air/fuel ratio. With CAI's that don't require tunes, you won't have to worry about increased wear of the engine or A/F ratios being dangerously off. The PCM does correct, but won't be able to adjust as smoothly or as accurately as a Bama tune. Our tunes give extra safety factor, increased power and increased mpg for your Mustang's engine, over a stock tune and CAI.

VCT - Our tunes are adapted for your current mods to be as efficient as possible. Variable cam timing is optimized for economy, as well as power. Additionally, spark advance and A/F ratios, etc., are improved for even more power!

Let me know if there's anything else I can help with!

Shane

I got my ipod today. The sync system isnt recognizing it. I havent put any music on it which could be why sync is giving me a "no files found" message. which leads me to the question:
The iTSX doesnt communicate thru sync at all? It just uses the obd module and the device to communicate?
I am gonna set up the device some more and try again.
** When I am ready to purchase the tuner what is the best way to go about doing that? Can I submit my tuning preferences with online purchase or should I call for consult?

How do you get the tunes for your email to the device? Just a click and drag?

Lots of bad info in this thread ...

Sync is not involved. It's bluetooth connection from you phone to the dongle.

To load an emailed tune you need to open email and select the attached tune. It will open the tune file in ITSX. Go through the steps to load a new tune and you will now see the one that was emailed. ITSX will first copy the tune to the DONGLE and then load the tune.

The TUNE is in your DONGLE .. not your device. If you load a tune for an iPhone and then sync the device with your android ... the tune will be available from either device. Once you tune is loaded you can delete the app .. reset phone .. whatever .. tune is still on dongle.

See the USB port on the dongle? You an also load the tune file the old fashioned way via your PC and a USB cable. Actually .. I recommend you save a copy of your STOCK tune this way ... using a USB cable an PC software.

The Dongle is basically a miniturized SCT/3 and the display for what it is doing and controlling it is via your iphone or droid.

yes I am aware the FordSync has nothing to do with iTSX. I wouldnt say there is alot of bad info here. It kinda seems to me that tunes are stored on both the device and dongle.
