I disagree with tony being so high up, and jeff gordon, he had very little competition for a long time
also, there are many other forms of racing, there should be some motorcycle racers on there, particularly valentino rossi

Kinser and Mansell are too low, Gordon, Stewart, and Earnhardt are too high.
My top 5 would be:
1. Mario Andretti
2. A.J. Foyt
3. Ayrton Senna
4. Schuey
5. Dale Earnhardt

The fun of a list is the debate it stirs and this one is no different. And I suppose the list could have qualified "Auto" racers and thus MotoGP and Off-Road racers would have no place on this particular list (but I do agree about great drivers in other forms of racing.)
I think most people are within a few spots of where they should be, but it's hard to rank people from different series. There are some other great drivers who have achieved much success not mentioned such as Kendall, Pruett, Moss and Kristensen to name a few. And then others who are great drivers but who haven't achieved the same measure of success (Martin, Robby Gordon.)

I completely missed that Sir Jackie isn't on the TOP 10 list, I guess my brain short-circuited. Sir Jackie needs to be top-10.
EDITed for rampant insanity.

Dale Earnhardt in front of Michael Schumacher?
And Tony Stewart is on the list, but Sebastien Loeb isn't?
And let's face it - there are plenty of NASCAR drivers better than Darrell Waltrip. Like Fireball Roberts and Cale Yarborough.

Lists always suck. Especially anything ESPN ever does. Guys are supposed to like lists, but I can't pick a best driver. I've been watching auto racing since around 1977 and all forms all I can pick is a favorite and even that is hard when you mix genres.

Agreed, the fact that neither Cale Yarborough or Scott Pruett is on the list is mind blowing. I would also mention that the lack of Bob Glidden or Don garlits is pretty mind numbing too when you consider that Jeff Gordon is that high on the list and that Tony Stewart even made the list. I can think of a dozen drivers besides the above far more worthy than either of them including Dave MacDonald, Bill Elliott, Jackie Stewart and Bobby Allison.

In my opinion there is more than just wining in a NASCAR.
If you look at the list of NASCAR's 50 greatest drivers - Stewart is not on that list.

Sebastien Loeb is another driver that must be on the list.
104 rallies = 40 wins, 64 podium finishes.
4 WRC championships in the row.

Can anyone explain it to me then why is Dale Earnhardt in front of Richard Petty?
Statistically Petty is waaaaay better than Earnhardt.
