INDYCAR: Indy to Hold Engine Manufacturers’ Summit

http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/artic...turers-summit/

As many as nine engine manufacturers and builders will gather Tuesday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a round table discussion about the future of power at the Indianapolis 500.

Representatives from Audi, BMW, Mazda, General Motors and Honda are expected to attend along with Ilmor and Cosworth.

Makes me ask the question, why?

Answer, Tony George is looking for some suckers to dump a ton of $$ into the IRL.

I really don't think that things are all that rosey in IRL land. Read the AUG C&D article. IRL/CART has virtually no young audience and it's questionable whether any CART/IRL race in the last 5 years other than the Indy 500 has legitimately turned a profit.

I'm amused by this, since costs associated with the multi-make CART series engines were one of the original reasons given for creating the IRL and the N/A-only rule which eventually turned IRL into a single-make series. Now, turbos are back on the docket and the more makes the merrier.

Interesting how TG's "Vision" keeps changing. But at the same time, I think CART in it's heyday was one of the best racing series in the world. The IRL and Champ Car were, well... not. If they can rebuild the IRL into something a lot like CART, that would be cool with me.

The entire time TG has had a single minded vision which has not changed. It always has been to take control of open wheel racing in N America. Looks like he's attained his vision.

Yes in it's heyday CART was a great racing series. The series was so strong at one point with events like Long Beach & Michigan that the Indy 500 lost a lot of its importance, hence TG's mission to put the Indy 500 back in it's eminent position even if doing so destroyed the rest of open wheel racing.
