Fabrizio Gollin and Matteo Bobbi will pilot No. 77.

A few new combinations are on the horizon in Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series competition. Doran Racing plans to field a Ford-powered Daytona Prototype for the first time in next weekend's Porsche 250 Presented by Bradley Arant at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama, while a Pontiac-powered Fabcar is expected for the August 27 round at Mid-Ohio.

Fabrizio Gollin and Matteo Bobbi will be behind the wheel of the gold No. 77 Doran at Barber, powered by a five-liter engine built by Roush Yates Engines.

“We hope to fire it up on Friday, and then put it on the chassis dyno at Yates on our way to Barber,” car builder Kevin Doran said Tuesday. “We feel like it will be a more raceable engine, giving us more power in traffic and a better overall combination. TRD (which built the Lexus engines used by the No. 77 this season) is a great company, but the current rules don’t allow the 4.3-liter engines to be competitive with the 5-liter engines.”

Five Dorans are expected for the race at Barber. Doran Racing also will field the No. 44 Pontiac for Bobby Labonte and Roberto Moreno, while the No. 9 Hyper Sport Infiniti of Rick Skelton and Joe Foster plans to return after missing several races. Completing the lineup are the No. 54 Kodak Bell Motorsports Pontiac of Terry Borcheller and Ralf Kelleners, and the No. 8 Rx.com/Synergy BMW of Burt and Brian Frisselle.

While it won’t debut until Mid-Ohio, Wisconsin short track veteran Dave Watson will be fielding a Pontiac-powered Fabcar for Roger Schramm and RVO Motorsports.

Schramm will be the team’s primary driver, with the second driver to be announced, while Watson also will serve as the test driver for the No. 91 blue and orange car.

The Fabcar is the former Cegwa Toyota fielded by Darius Grala, the first privateer Daytona Prototype and one of the six DPs to compete in the 2003 Rolex 24 At Daytona. Grala now co-drives the No. 3 PAP-Parts/EZEXE BMW Riley fielded by Southard Motorsports with Shane Lewis.

Watson served as Grand American’s director of competition from 2000-2002 before returning to racing. He was the ARTGO champion in 1976, captured the ASA title in 1977 and was the USAC stock car rookie of the year in 1977. Watson also won the NASCAR Grand American championship in 1979, and was part of that year’s banner rookie crop in the then-Winston Cup Series, joining Dale Earnhardt, Terry Labonte, Harry Gant and Geoff Bodine. He was the SCCA Trans-Am Series manager of pro racing before teaming with Schramm’s RVO Motorsports in sports car competition.

Schramm is already a winner in Rolex Series competition. He won the American GT class at Road America during the inaugural Grand American season in 2000, co-driving with Irv Hoerr and Werner Frank.
