"You Dropped a Bomb on me, Baby!" Car and Driver-March 2012
That's what she (Chevy) said
Details from the latest GT500 article-
Car will be built on standard production line, along with v6, GT, and Boss, to keep costs down.
"To what, exactly? It is likely that the Shelby coupe will start at less than $60,000.00 when it appears in dealerships in May, but not by much. Production is "limited" to how many the company can sell (I, Atilla, had read this last year about the regular boss, also, before the numbers of 3250 came around) - Ford would be happy to build 10,000 a year - and there will be no effort to cap the run at a certain number."
"theoretically, any 2013 Shelby should have the muscle to hit 200 mph, Ford will govern the top speed of the convertible to 155, or so, the current Shelby's speed limit....It is also likely that the Shelby coupe without the Performance and Track packages may be governed due to cooling issues."
They got 0-60 in 3.7 and 1/4 mile in 11.7 on mismatched winter tires....I do not think those numbers are estimates...Also, according to a Ford guy, the stock Pirelli tires are supposed to be almost as good as slicks when the Pirelli's are heated up.

Re-read the article. No where does it state that the numbers were made on winter tires. The performance numbers in the chart are only estimates, it even says so at the top. But I do like those estimates.

Sorry, eyes are getting bad, I looked everywhere to see if it said estimate, I only saw that for the price. The article said the car was on mismatched winter tires, if the times were estimates then obviously that's not the case....thanks for the correction, guess it's time for reading glasses

No matter how you slice it, the ZL1 will be looking at those LED taillights all the way to 60 and the 1/4. It would also be safe to assume that the '12 GT500 will be a better match for the ZL1 in those contests in case they want to pull the 'same model year' excuse.

The article was interesting, but it cast some doubt on the new GT500's handling. Yes is was on snow tires, yes it was a ride along, but after reading it I was left with the sense that ZL1 may end up being the better handler.
That said, do you guys think Ford is looking to beat the ZL1 all around, or only in a straight line so to speak?

I've assumed that the zl1 would be the better-handling car, but if the GT500 is even competitive in holding a line through a turn, there will be no comparing the two. There simply is no way the chevy can stay with the Shelby on the straights. I fully expect the '13 to corner better than previous years' models.

Meh........I won't really care if the ZL1 is the better "turner", but I don't believe it will be. Most races will be at the dragstrip and highway pulls and we all know who is gonna win those races.
GT500 will still remain the King of the Streets.

That has always been the limiting factor for fast stangs. I still have my 85 GT from college. I ended putting on Michelin XGT 315/40 ZR 16 tires mounted on 16 x 10 Gotti (remember those haven't said that word in a long time) wheels on it for traction. I had to widen the rear end, what a pain.
