Took My GT500 to the Dragstrip

...and I suck!

I was up at Cecil County Dragway today and ran the car a dozen times. My best run was 12.622. I was having problems launching the car. I'd either spin like crazy or get bogged down. I kept having to make it up on the top end. I've got a fast street car, not so much at the track. It was a lot of fun though and I'm looking forward to going back soon.

Just incase anyone is wondering

Stock weight including air pump and crap in my glove box and center console.
I'm 6'4 235lbs
Half a tank of gas

it's all good, i bet you had fun and that's a lot of passes
at 75-80 i would only get 3-4

looks like 4-5 10ths is in the 60ft, you need drag radials

huge trap speed, should be like a very low 12 sec pass with that mph

No, that trap speed is good for a mid 11 second pass if you could get it to launch hard enough.

Definitely need some drag radials or even slicks.

You should see how bad I was launching. In the hands of a good drag racer my car could do so much more. To be honest I was afraid I was going to loose control at times. It felt like I was on ice going down the track.

The Hankook V12s are softer and sticker than the stock Goodyears. However, with the additional power with the pulley and tune it negated the additional traction. I'll get some drag radials at some point.

bpmurr, How low did you bring the tire pressure down on the rears? I bring them down on my Nittos from 32psi to 23psi. That may help if you hadn't already done so... I also bring the fronts to 40psi. This made a significant difference for me when I ran.

1.9, I bet he was still spinning crazy. a 28" slick will cure that problem. With 1.6's you'll see those mid 11's

I'm cutting 1.7's on stock 3.55 gears, you guys just need a bigger slick since power is not a problem for you guys lol

I never even checked my pressure. I would assume they were around 30. I was told it's actually better to raise the pressure on a street tire in the rear.

Were you racing that guy for a dollar?

I've seen marked improvement in 60' by lowering my PSI in the rear... Reason is that it allows more side wall flex for better grip on launch. Next toime you go, give it a try. If you're still on the stockers, just drop them to 23-25 psi.. Down from the normal 32 you should see a little more bite on launch. Assuming you launch the same (same rpm, clutch release, etc - this in and of itself is challenging and takes more practice than I've had time to give it).

Lowering the pressure in regular street (non drag) radials can cause less tread patch contact because the center of the tread cups losing pressure with the surface. And too much pressure can cause the outer edges of the tread to lose contact pressure with the surface.

Drag radials and race slicks are different due to their softer more flexible construction and perform better with reduced air pressure

I never knew that about lowering the pressure in a normal radial. Thanks.

We'll have to meet up after I get my clutch done and you can make a few passes on my MT's.

So well over 4000 pounds, was the same for me when I ran at RDI (well ahem, except for the 235 lbs part, on a good day I might get down to 275 lbs )

Much truth spoken here!

You need drag radials...bad! I could never get out of the 2's with my BFG's. That was before the Whipple. I cut consistent 1.7's now (not great, but much better than before) with a twin screw. You should be deep into the 11's. Were you powershifting?
