PickupTrucks.com is reporting that a 5.0L Twin Turbo engine code named "Road Runner" will appear in the 2012 Shelby GT500. While the code name is tied to a Mustang engine in development, it is NOT a 5.0L Twin Turbo. That program has been dead for quite some time.

It is my understanding that the 2011 GT500 will have 555 horsepower and 555 lb-ft from the same 5.4L powerplant in the 2010 model.

 

But with an aluminium block, right?

 

But the article says the 2012 shelby, i was assuming they are switching after we see the aluminum blocked 5.4 in the 2011.

 

Would they swap to the aluminium block for just one year though?

 

The 5.0L Twin Turbo is dead. The 2011 Shelby will have the aluminum block, and I don't see Ford dropping that after one year.

 

Lately I've been hearing people taking about the 5.0TT being back on the table. This was mentioned by a very reliable source a month ago or so. It could be possible we may see this engine in an SE.

I thought they were going to the 5.8L for 2012 with the aluminum block?

I really don't see them straying from the S/C. That's been a late model staple of the car (Cobra and GT500). Still, I want to see it closer to (or over) the 600hp mark soon.

 

As of an hour ago, the 5.0L TT was dead, and Road Runner never was a 5.0L.

 

What size is the Road Runner motor then?

He wouldn't say, but this source told me MONTHS ago to keep my ears open for Road Runner news and rumors. I wonder if the Road Runner is a natural aspirated 5.4L, but that's only my wondering, not anything I've heard.

 

Makes no sense what so ever to keep the 5.4 in production once the 5.0 becomes the mainstream engine. If they're going to desert the mods, I'd expect they will do it altogether. I still believe that the Ecoboosted version of the Coyote will be the GT500 plant on 2012+ cars.

 

There are no Ecoboost V8 engines in the works as far as I know. Kinda defeats the purpose.

 

not really, ecoboost v8, gives the mustang v10 or v12 power for gas use of a V8!

I guess we'll see.

However, I'll point out that our sources have provided correct information about 1.) the 6.7-L 'Scorpion' diesel V-8, including engine architecture (back in April 2008) and 2.) that the 5.0-L will be available for both the Mustang and F-150 (back in January).

We also reported from our Ford sources about the F-100 and that the F-150 will also get a four-cylinder.

I'm going to trust our sources again that "Road Runner" is the code-name for the non-EcoBoost twin turbo 5.0-L V-8.
