My GT500 vs....a Dodge Avenger?
My GT500 vs....a Dodge Avenger?
So today, I'm going down the interstate minding my own business when a Dodge Avenger pulls up beside me complete with 3 passengers and keeps looking over evidently trying to race. I wave and ignore him, so he floors his Avenger, gets out about 400 feet past me, then slows down to let me "catch up." He gestures over as if to say "let's go." So I dropped it into 2nd gear, redlined the tach, and within 3 seconds I was over 100 and several hundred feet past him. I then slowed down...and slowed down some more...all the way down to about 50. He never caught up to me! He must have slowed down to 40 mph on the interstate to avoid coming in contact with me again.
I picked it back up to about 75 and went on my way...

What a waste of gas.
haha
I wouldn't really call it a race, nor am I a "street racer." By that I mean I don't drive around looking for a race, but when provoked, especially by a 6 cylinder piece of crap loaded with 4 people, I might just exceed the speed limit by a few mph for a minute or so

All they really wanted was to see your GT500 go though.

You just gave them what they were looking for. I'm sure they had no thoughts of being able to beat you, unless they were just uneducated about the car and thought you may have been just another V6 out there. Regardless, you wasted the gas and chanced an extremely large ticket, or the possibility of getting your car impounded (25+MPH over the limit and over 85MPH is criminal speeding, at least in the state of AZ) against a car that you knew ahead of time had no chance. If you are cool with that, then you shouldn't seem so shocked that someone would provoke you to jump on it.

I'm sure no one else with a V8 Mustang has ever exceeded the speed limit on a rural interstate. I certainly won't anymore. I've now been thoroughly reprimanded and I'm sorry.
OK everyone, I get it, I'm a criminal. It takes about three seconds to go from 50-100 in a GT500. I've had the car for about a month. I rarely break the speed limit under any circumstances, nor did I intend to do 100 mph in this instance. This took place on a rural interstate in one of the least populated states in America (Wyoming) and I MIGHT have hit 100 for about 1 second. I did not mean to incur the wrath of anyone on this site by telling what I thought was a pretty funny story. My bad...

I was just pointing out that you seemed insulted almost that a guy in a Dodge Avenger tried to race you. I was merely pointing out that people everywhere will do that, and if you were cool with that, then don't feel insulted. It's going to happen again, what you do in that situation is your own decision. There's not a guy on this board who hasn't exceeded the speed limit in his car, I don't think that's the point. No matter what, you'll always get a response of "street racing is bad mmmkay?" when you tell these stories, you pick your spots, just like you did here.
Two examples - on my way home from work tonight a guy in a late 90's TA with a supremely loud (and pathetic) sounding exhaust was all over me just trying to push my buttons. On a less crowded road, you bet your *** I'd have gone. Too much traffic though, so I just shook my head and cruised on. Last weekend, Sunday morning at 6:15 AM on the same freeway on my way to the golf course, a guy in a Hyundai or something was doing the same thing. Uhhh, no. So I just shook my head and cruised on. Guy in the TA that Sunday morning, yeah, I'd have risked a run in with Johnny Law. But that's my own personal choice, given the conditions, etc. and I own the consequences.
My response was just confusion that you'd risk a hefty ticket / impound for racing a Dodge Avenger. It's your car (a frickin awesome one I might add!) and your choice. Don't let anyone tell you any different. It's the Interwebs man, Al Gore gave us this thing so we could all rant and rave and tell people they are wrong. Now you tell us we're stupid, we'll call you names, etc. back and forth, and all will be right again.
Lighten up Francis...
