The more gears added to a trans has to add weight to the trans. I would think the lighter the cars , the more the fuel mileage would improve.
The new vette has a 7 speed manual. Basically two overdrive gears

Any weight added to the xmission is relatively small and is well below the car's center of gravity anyway. It shouldn't affect the performance in that regard.

Imagine how much of a pain that would be to go through on a day to day stop and go traffic basis

If my Shelby had it, I'd still keep it.

Cool

I would think a 5 speed manual trans with one overdrive gear could provide the same gas savings as a 7 speed . With my GT500, I am going fast enough in 4th gear to shift into 6th gear. Once on the highway, I have very little need to be shifting often. The most frequent shifting is done in town, but then I have no need to use 5th or 6th gear. So how is a 7 speed trans going to save gas in town ? Now if I had a 4.80 rear gear, then I could see how a 7 speed trans could save gas.

Wouldn't you get lower RPMs in 7th (then a 5 speed in 5th with same rear gears) and thus better MPGs?

It would depend on the gear ratios...just because you have more gears doesn't mean you will automatically get better gas mileage. Probably will, but not a given.
