Mach's also had a SE "cost" advantage due to engine being used in Marauder and Aviator. New SE should be a stand alone engine package, which makes a price point of ~$40K not too bad at all in my opinion.

It appears that there will in fact be a gas guzzler tax for the 2011.

Not exactly the same price range. The Shelby (while expensive outright) is still a pretty decent value for what you get, and what you can ultimately do it.
The M3 I configured was $64k with Nav, Prem. package that 's it. Sure it's 10k more than the Shelby but in the scheme of things its within striking range. BTW, I was offered a 2010 E92 M3 at $200 above invoice making my car $60k. When you consider there will probably no deals on the 2011 GT500 the M3 is even more in reach now.

Now you start adding everything such as the DCT, Technology Package, full leather, 19's (would go aftermarket that's why I didn't pick them) you are right at $70k..

Did this info come from a dealer or a website? Just curious.

I hear you on the M3 love, it's one of my dream cars. Just an all around beautiful machine. I will say though, that a 2011 GT500 + 10k worth of mods (savings over 2011 M3) would be awfully hard to pass up. I wish I had that problem.

M3, IS-F, S5, or E63 will run you $60K+ with options. The only one I see really standing out in that crowd is the M3, and next year it will have a Competition Package ($2500) as an option.

I still think we're comparing apples to oranges, but it does pass the time.

And you are right, HOWEVER, it is interesting as you look at history, this apples to oranges is becoming more like Lemons and Limes.. We will soon have Limons!

Meaning in English, that these two cars, once very far apart are moving together and may one day be comparable - hopefully in performance, comfort, etc. and not Price!

Interesting perspective, and I don't disagree. More and more you see cars going for something upscale of them, like the CTS-V gunning for the M5, the Taurus SHO gunning for the A6, etc. I still don't think we're at quite that level yet for the GT500 and M3, but since we see them race in the Koni Challenge, people love to 'magazine race' on forums.

I guess it all depends on those EPA numbers.

Actually, right now it looks as though the M3 may be a legit 10k more expensive than a GT500, which is arguably a bit more than....a bit. And I'm curious, if the new GT500 can outrun the M3 both in terms of acceleration and on the typical track, an eventuality which is hardly far fetched since on many a road course the existing GT500 comes close to M3 numbers now, are you then going to revise your argument? I ask this because, in the past, you have made what you believe to be a true 'enthusiasts' view on performance very obvious and as such we know that, according to your previous statements, things like refinement and comfort shouldn't be a major consideration.

When you are comparing MSRP to MSRP it definitely is $10k more. However, new M3's can be had for just $500 over invoice. I am assuming there will be no deals for awhile on the GT500 so in out the door price for similarly equipped cars the difference can now be only $5-6k. If we can start getting deals on the GT500 than we would probably be back to the $10k difference. What is also amazing is that the GT 500 actually gets better fuel economy than the smaller motored M3.

I think the difference is big if you want a car with an IRS and you like normally aspirated high winding powerplants. Then you just may get a stripper M3 with just leather and be in a normally aspirated persons wet dream. I've heard one of these cars with secondary cat deletes along with a set of Borlas and at 8400rpm the thing sounded outrageous. Not to mention it put down almost 380rwhp with a tune.

M3 is a boring car to look at, doesn't get the blood pumping at all.

Hm, tough choice on looks, not.

At $50k + I need to like the way a car looks, not just its performance. BMW's cars all bore the crap out of me.

Sweet, you got a vid of it...something we could hear?
BTW, that GT500 vid is sex, I've been looking for a reason to post it.
