The trick may not be to put down more power (or much more power), but to put it down more efficiently, perhaps through tweaking the intake, raising the RPM limit, improving the shifter...and possibly enhancing the suspension dynamics.

And again, an aluminum block would not only shave weight, but shave it where it's needed: the front end, thereby leading to better weight distribution and a better balanced car.

A 6 to 10% horsepower bump combined with all of the above would, in total, net a pretty impressive performance gain...and a great car!

The current 3V aluminum block can handle a ton of power. It just needs forged internals, which the 5.4L in the Shelby already has. I am assuming that the new 5.0L aluminum block will be stout too.

The Shelby, however, would use the 5.4L engine it uses today, but in GT supercar configuration (aluminum block), which, to my understanding, was significantly costlier.

Ford always says everything is costlier. Is the Shelby going to a new engine in 2011 or continuing with the 5.4L?

I believe the working consensus is that it will continue on with the 5.4L - further tweaked, no doubt. And from a couple of rumors I've heard, it might trade the iron block for aluminum (which would be a huge dynamic advantage). But that last part is only speculation at this point.

The other rumors are Twin Turbo 5.0.

4cam330 on SVTperformance..who I trust explicitly on his info states the 2011 GT500 will get the al. block. I don't know and it wasn't stated that it was the block out of the Ford GT, I don't think it will be as the Ford GT block needs quite a few hours in getting a wetsump oiling system to work. I think Ford will just cast a new block to save money..

I personally believe a 5.0L 4V superscharged engine that can rev to 7k rpm is a great ticket. I was bummed that the current GT500 only revs to 6250rpm..come on it's a 4v motor.

i would not bet on a built 5.0, just like in the past with the mass produced v8's we have all seen a lower popping point. i do not feel it would be cost effective to put out a motor for the gt with the same treatment as the gt500.

Don't doubt it, but not for a while.
Maybe when the DI 5.0 comes out...but until then, I'd probably look toward the 5.4 (seeing as its not tapped out yet)

And they probably won't be the same.
The 5.0 sounds like it'll be many different variations, which is cool.
You probably wouldn't be able to just move parts from one to the other.

It's starting to look like an IRS in the back. I can't wait to see what the ruling on this is.

What do you all think?

I don't think that's an IRS mechanism.

If they do go IRS, it'll be a helluva thing - the Shelby will be capable of being a serious headache to cars like the new M3.
