2011 California Special & SVT Performance Package
Ok, this is the 1st time I am writing anything on this site or any other site, so a "post virgin" if you will; but this subject has really gotten me riled up! As an owner of 2 GT's (yes both 5.0's a '93 hatch and a '95 vert) and a "Cobra" ( yes again a '95 5.0), and a BIG FAN of the 1st generation stangs, I must say that I side with member "2k7gtcs" regarding the SVT VS Shelby lettering! Anyone that know their pony history recalls the glory days of the '60's when there was a romance between ford and ol man Shelby! does anyone recall the fight betwenn the two and the '80's when ol man Shel was cranking out Dodge's??? Hell let me announce my radical idea on this forum, and how about ford giving where the credit is DUE, and lets name it the "COLETTI"! Put that on the back of the 2011 SVT COBRA, or at the very least put that as an option and see who and how many order that option!!! Ok thats my 5 cents worth! And I hope the GT will be the 5.0, cause thats what I am waiting for and that's where my money will go! Galpin Ford is waiting!
Nice post...welcome aboard....
No but building another configuration DOES cost more money, than offering a loaded up car in lesser configurations (with more options)
Case in point, Canadians have LESS options than the US counterpart, but more standard features.
It's more cost effective for Ford to build it this way.

Canadian BASE GT convertible = 41700 + 1350 + 100 (A/C tax) = 43150.
US base GT convertible = 33000 + 850 = 33850
hmmm...
They probably have him in the basement gagged and his fingers beaten with a hammer until after the LA auto show. Ford is not taking any chances. That is why Boomer is so hush hush, he does not want to be in Ford hell with KC and Groot!
I heard Ford has a coupla black suburbans on loan from GM for just such an occasion. The official story is "We're just benching GM's vehicles for an upcoming product"

While I completely understand the marketing forces behind the SHELBY name and can appreciate the nostalgia etc. Its a common fact that Colleti's swan song at Ford was the Terminator/Mach 1 program with Scott Hoag......Theses 2 stangs would have never happened without Colletti and they will live forever as 2 of the best efforts at Ford for the Mustang in recent history.

I have lurked on here for a LONG time, so I am a "first time poster" as well.
Do I like the GT500 name, and Shelby badges being stuck on the car? NO
Should it be called an SVT Cobra? IMO, YES (because I feel it is time to move on from the "past")
Is the badge/name deal a money making scheme, for Ford AND Shelby? IMO, YES
Should the GT500 be called the "Shelby GT500" if that is what the styling is based on or a throwback to? OF COURSE IT SHOULD!
The "new" GT500 is no doubt the baddest Mustang ever built -- as were the Shelbys in their time, and I only hope it keeps getting better.
No matter how much I dislike the Shelby name being used, regardless of the fact he went Dodge in the '80s, used an Oldsmobile engine in the Shelby Series 1, even if he had ZERO to do(directly) with the current car, and no matter how many people have a negative opinion towards the name and badge use -- I am going to give credit where credit is due. The Mustang is an evolution of an idea, or original concept. Shelby is (sorry, WAS) a pioneer in high performance vehicles with a portfolio starting with the A/C Cobra and the first Shelby Mustang, also the 2 most recognizable.
For all of you saying give credit where credit is due -- practice what you preach. If it were not for Shelby, who knows where the performance/muscle car market may be. Who knows what could have been, what wouldn't have been, or what should have been. Maybe it would be better -- we could have 500hp GT's and 800hp "SVT Cobras" OR maybe we could have NOTHING. Maybe the Mustang program would have died off in the 70's after the Mustang II -- or maybe it would have stayed the Mustang II. Maybe the Probe WOULD have been the Mustang replacement. We DON'T know. What we do know is that Carol Shelby shaped the "Mustang World" in the sixties, and you have to give him SOME credit for the direction of the cars in the years to follow.
If any of you "nay-sayers" had came up with a great idea back in 1965 to make "something" better, more powerful, handle "given tasks" more efficiently, faster, etc., I think you would want your name used when "something" was redesigned as a throwback to what you created. Without Shelby, there is a really good possibility there would have been no SVO, NO Coletti, NO SVT, NO Cobra, Lightning, etc. -- NO performance program at ALL -- Ford could have ended up being boring like Toyota, with nothing for the enthusiast. You have to realize the Mustang, Cobra, GT500, etc, is an idea -- one that has been improved upon year after year (save for a few in the 70's). Its like some of you guys actually believe that they(Ford) decided to name it the SHELBY GT500 by walking down the street, and asking the first well groomed gent what his last name was -- "oh, its Shelby, wh, wh, why do you a, a, aaa, ask?" "Oh, we just wanted a dang fine name for our new Mustang motorcar, its FAST" It is not just a name! It has a lot of heritage behind it!
With that being said, do I think Shelby's name should be on the car? NO.
It should be an evolution to something new. I just think since Ford DID design the car with the throwback theme that "some of us" need to "give credit where credit is due" If you like the car stylistically being based off of a sixties Shelby, then don't bit** when they name it a SHELBY. The name makes sense. Maybe we should be upset with Ford not for what they named it, but that they weren't more creative and had a new idea. Then you just go back to the begininng. Was this car a money making scheme? YES, without a doubt. And we should be happy that Ford is still into "making money"! It was looking pretty dim for a while.
/end rant
Oh yeah, hi everyone. This is a great site you all have here.

I don't get point in all the whining about the name. The facts and performance speak louder than any badge you slap on it.
I've stated this before, but I feel like it's a point that people miss when discussing the Shelby/SVT name topic.
Generally speaking, who is going to be buying a 50k dollar Mustang??? Not anyone in their 20's or 30's that have grown up with SVT Cobras and have learnt to resepct those cars that SVT has put out in recent years. Almost no one in that age bracket has the money to afford a car like that unless they have won the lottery or are a drug dealer. That is just a simple fact.
The people able to afford GT500's are older, and likely have a huge nostalgia for the models of the 60's that they couldn't afford back then. Hence the Shelby name being tacked on to it, and a bit of retro styling.
It's just Ford simply being aware of who is in their market bracket, and making the car more appealing to them.

I am 34, don't like and have never cared about the 60's cars. I grew up with 5.0's and owned 3 of them before buying my GT500. I haven't won the lottery and I have a legitimate career. Your "simple facts" are false. You love to ASSume so much, quite hilarious.
BTW the other people I know with GT500's are in their 20's. 3 of them. LOL. I also know a 31 year old Marine helicopter pilot who owns an 07 Z06 and a 600RWHP terminator. Guess he's a drug dealer.

Unfortunately, no matter what you seem to think, or whatever rap video fantasy world you live in, owning a 50k dollar car at that age is not something MOST (ie almost all) people at that age can legitimately do.
The point I was trying to make is why the GT500 is marketed as a Shelby and not an SVT, and I don't really care to argue about who can afford what at what age because there is always exceptions to every situation.
Just so I am clear, let me dumb it down for you...GT500 owners are genrally older because older people generally have more money. That's why Ford was smart and decided to call it a name that appeals to older people. Get it?

I look forward to your next pile of typed vomit for all of us to enjoy.
