Man Dies After Diving At Sunken Aircraft Carrier
POSTED: 9:44 pm EDT August 19, 2007
PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A man died after diving at the decommissioned aircraft carrier Oriskany, an intentionally created artificial reef.
The 39-year-old man, who was not identified, died hours after he was taken to Baptist Hospital on Saturday, said Steve Lewallen, a U.S. Coast Guard civilian search and rescue controller.
The Oriskany was sunk 24 miles southeast of Pensacola in the Gulf of Mexico in 2006 and attracts divers from across the globe.
The man surfaced from a dive and was having difficulty breathing. He also struggled to maintain consciousness, Lewallen said.
The man appeared to be suffering from symptoms of decompression sickness, Lewallen said.

Too young to be Paul....I wonder what happened down there...
I like the KR type one the rest are a no imo.
Sounds like DCS... Probably diving out of his training... The top of the "Mighty O" starts at 60ft and the flight deck is at 130ft which is a recreational diver's limit. Anything beyond that requires tech training. Alot of recreational divers will push it and go past the flight deck and deeper into the hangers (which are open). They either get lost or lose track of time and either ran out of air or go past decompression limits, which if bad enough will cause DCS (tiny nitrogen bubbles) in your blood.
As they make there way to the surface the pressure lessens and the bubbles get bigger. Same physics laws apply as shaking a pop bottle and then opening it. Very painful way to die.
Narcosis also happenes at depth. It kinda like being drunk and it gives you a false sense of security. That may explain why some divers take the risks that they do. You just gotta recognize it in time.
Please study chapters 8 and 9 on the physics and diving. We'll have a test next week...
