Here's a better pic of the grommet on a 07 (I apologize for the horrible lens shadow. It's from the extension that I have to use in order to use a UV filter).

I agree... even if the grommet is sealed with RTV, water can easily go through the slots. I would like to know how water is getting up there in the first place. Ford obviously knows this is a problem because of the "splash" shielding they have in place:

1). A plastic guard
2). Clear tape
3). Foam "shield"

Here is the grommet on mine. Its totally lose. That grommet definitely is not there to stop the water. The water should not reach to the grommet at the first place.

I have followed this leak issue fairly closely - on the different forums, and most talk about the grommet that has been discussed here.

However, one Mustang owner pulled back the carpeting and the underlayment on the passenger side of his car, and got to the seam where the metal floor hits the sidewall. He stated that this seam is sealed with some form of sealant, but on his vehicle there was a clearly recognizable void in the sealant - a bare spot. He added as much sealant there [in the void] as he could, and he went on to suggest that his leak has gone away.

This of course is heresay, and I do not have photos nor have I done this myself. I am only posting it to foster some discussion.

Is this the source of the leak? That grommet does not look like it was designed to be watertight.

Let's hope there isn't more than one area that is leaking on our cars .

I have seen differing comments and opinions on this and other forums as well. One interesting comment was that his car only leaked when parked facing uphill when it rained.

The one constant seems to be that the leaks are all occurring on the right side footwell. I haven't seen a single post where water leaked on the driver's side. I'm hoping that means there is only one source of water and that Ford will issue a TSB for it soon. The fact that at least some cars have plastic sheeting over the electronics in that area leads me to believe that Ford has known for some time about the problem and chose a band-aid solution rather than a true fix .

Just for the record my Mustang is always parked on flat land, and when it happened last, it was on flat land.

i think i am going to go crazy...on friday it was raining in the morning when i drove to work. when i got in my car to go home at the end of the day it smelled like mildew. i cant find the smell and nothing felt wet,but by then it had been in the garage for 9 hours and was dry. can anyone give me some suggestions as to where to look. i pulled the passenger side carpet back and slid my arm under it but everything was dry, now it still smells (not as bad) but i am going to loose it if i cant figure out whats going on here...HELP PLEASE

It's easy to notice, just check the carpet anywhere in the passenger side floorboard and look around the fuse box. Luckily I didn't have any mildew smells when mine got wet.

My dealer Service department took two days to find the source of the leak. I didn't care how long it took, salty wet roads here anyway.

They said they finally found a spot on the right side of the cowl that would leak. While the car is sitting still, water drains normally from the cowl. While driving, however, it sloshes around and finds an area to seep out of the cowl and eventually into the car. They added some seam sealer.

Sorry, no pictures but if I ever take the cowl off, I'll snap some.

It is not raining right now so I can not yet verify that this fixed the problem.

I had the problem this weekend. It's been raining here in FL.. but it was bone dry outside when I was driving. I noticed it when I first got in the car, though... it was facing very slightly uphill in the driveway... I opened the door, and noticed the water on the inside of the seal.... nothing behind the kick pannel, though... just water that rolled out from under the rocker moulding onto the carpet.

There was no TSB issued for this problem ?

Couple of weeks ago I had an occurence of something similar. One a HEAVY rain storm I got into my car and I have notice that one on my map light was ON....

And I guess ther is two issues with this, water comming in and wetting carpet and eventually rust. and water going in the SJB and screwing all your electrical.

But noting since.

The carpet on the passenger floor was wet yesterday while I was driving thru light rain and the car was not parked during the rain so it came in while driving.

Haven't noticed this yet, but I'll keep my eyes open...and be careful with the wand at the high-pressure wash stations
