Very Loud Knocking

After a very aggressive driving session on the highway, I am now hearing a very loud knocking sound coming from my engine. I checked my oil and radiator fluid and it seems okay. Im sure I broke something but not sure where to check.

Loud knocking is not a good noise and could be many different things. Does the knocking get louder when you give it more gas? Does it increase in speed with the engine, or with the vehicle speed? Did you notice any metal flakes in the oil on the dipstick?

Check the driver's side valve cover with the hood open and a "helper" on the gas pedal in neutral. If it is isolated to just the driver's side valves, I believe there is a TSB for 2005 Mustangs.

Could be an exhaust leak also.

This is an overhead cam motor. no pushrods at all. unless you are talking about a piston rod, in which case I am not sure how it would have anything to do with the cam. not trying to sound like a jerk or anything here just trying to help diagnose.

I would get a hold of a mechanic's stethoscope or a long dowel and put it to your ear and the other end on different spot on the motor. listen to the motor with it to try and determine where the knock is coming from. try to rule out exhaust leaks, a/c clutch issues, etc. if you hurt the motor badly I would think it would be pretty apparent.

did you hear anything out of the ordinary when you were on the throttle? how high did you take the RPM's?

does it make the sound when the motor is cold? also check for loose brackets, motor mounts etc.

basically the lifters are just lash adjusters, and the cam sits above the valves and runs off a chain from the crank. the rockers roll from under the can and puch the valves down. I will see if i can dig up a pic.

also check for crank shaft end play put a pry bar between the lower crank pully and the timing cover see if the lower crank pully will move back & forth about 1/2 inch or so you
you may have excessive end play in the crank. also check your cam sensors one maybe slightly loose not making a good connection

Was told by the dealer that it was a cam phase adjuster than needed replaced??? and told that labor was 5 hours and parts were about $500. This is above my knowledge level.

Can you explain this issue to me -- I have never heard of phasers except on star trek.

Cam phasers are spring loaded sprockets that allow the Variable cam timing to change the cam angle.

heres a exploded view of the head, and one of the whole engine...sorry for the text added to the engine pic- I was bored one night long ago while waiting for my ordered car...was going to print up a poster sized one for the garage wall, but never got around to it...the original pics are on this site somewhere(I think- if not it was the media.ford.com site)

JWooski-
on the phase adjusters, what exactly goes wrong with them? is there a spool for the oil that gets stuck, bad solenoid, bad bearing on the sprocket, or what? I gotta ask as years down the road think we'll all be having to mess around in there...just wondered if theres any way to disassemble/loosen up what ever gets stuck type of thing...also gotta wonder if simply rocking the engine backwards a little with a breaker bar or such/any other thoughts that might help unstick one before it hammers permanently in the stuck position...thanks for any info

If it sounds like this, you're in trouble.
